Migrant laborer Sabeer Islam from WB posed as a doctor, arrested: Kerala

Sabeer Islam from Murshidabad in West Bengal was arrested by Kerala police from Perumbavoor after it became clear that he was a fake doctor. It turned out that Sabeer did not have an MBBS degree and had in fact completed only primary education. He is alleged to have run a thriving practice and ‘treated’ hundreds of patients.

A woman migrant worker from Assam had gone to his ‘clinic’ for treatment. Sabeer charged her Rs.1,000 and gave her an unknown injection and a glucose drip. Subsequently, she fainted and had to be admitted to the Aluva district hospital. The lady informed the police and filed a complaint.

Sabeer was staying in a room which he had converted into his ‘clinic.’ Police raided the place called Bhai colony between Aluva and Perumbavoor in Ernakulam district. They found medical equipment that included syringes, tablets, injections, a stethoscope and an instrument used to monitor blood pressure.

The fake doctor had been living in Kerala for the past 6 years. Islam admitted to the police that he had ‘treated’ several patients and administered IV drips and injections.

Superintendent of Police, Ernakulam rural, K Karthick has ordered a detailed inquiry into the activities of the accused. He said that more details will emerge about his background once the interrogation is over. Sabeer was produced before the court and remanded to police custody.

Perumbavoor has become a lawless region where illegal immigrants from Bangladesh and criminals have found a safe haven to hide. To avoid detection, they blend among poor migrant laborers from different parts of the country. The administration turns a blind eye and criminals indulge in rape, murder, theft and drug running.

3 al-Qaeda operatives were arrested from Perumbavoor last year following a secret operation conducted by the NIA. Incidentally, simultaneous raids had taken place in West Bengal and 6 were apprehended from Murshidabad (Sabeer’s hometown) by the same intelligence agency.

The local government does not know how many migrant laborers live in these areas. Vested interests make sure that the state machinery does not dig deep into the background of those with criminal intentions.

That Sabeer had been operating his fake clinic quite openly points to serious lapses in the state intelligence apparatus. Had the lady not fainted, he might still be treating and fleecing seriously ill innocent patients, at will.

  1. Such fake doctors abound and move freely in our society. Only a few get into the net and are apprehended. Under police interrogation they sometimes reveal the identities of similar fake doctors as their colleagues. It may be a life and death issues of general public at their hands.
