A girl named Jyoti Kumari changed her religion to marry her lover Mohsin in Ranchi, Jharkhand. After marriage, she was asked by her in-laws to consume beef, to which she denied. Due to this, her husband left her and fled, as reported in Republic.

Jyoti and Mohsin were friends since they were in seventh standard. Around three months back, when she turned 18, they decided to get married. On 23rd August, 2018, she left her house and went away with Mohsin. Her father filed a case of kidnapping on 25th August, 2018. He also mentioned that a young man named Mohsin could change the religion of his daughter. But in her statement to police, Jyoti accepted that she had gone with Mohsin on her own will.

After the marriage when Jyoti reached her in-laws’ house with Mohsin, she was served the ‘forbidden meat’ and was asked to eat it. Also, whenever she used to worship as per her old faith, her in-laws used to stop her. They used to give her a book and ask her to do namaz. A video dated 24th August, 2018 has surfaced where a Maulavi in Doranda area of Ranchi, Jharkhand was seen converting Jyoti’s religion in the presence of Mohsin.

While she used to suffer all this, Mohsin never supported her and then left her. Jyoti feels cheated that she changed her religion for Mohsin but he, instead of taking a stand for her, betrayed her. Currently she is back to her parents’ house. They want to register a FIR against the man but fear that they may get harm due to this.

However, the SSP of Ranchi has said that if the victim files a complaint, then action will be taken by the police.
