Is Eastern Uttar Pradesh Becoming a Key Target for Christian Missionaries?

News appearing in local Hindi newspapers suggests an upsurge in Christian conversion activities in Eastern Uttar Pradesh. Missionaries have been using quackery, monetary offers and even threats and kidnapping to convert vulnerable Hindus in various areas of UP.

In the latest news, a man named Kuldeep Yadav has been arrested by the police for fooling people and converting them into Christianity in Lohia Nagar of Maharajganj district of UP. As reported by Zee News, police got a complaint that some people who meet for prayer meetings at the Prabhavati Devi Memorial Trust are fooling people by showing them quack healing videos to lure them to convert.

According to the police, a man informed them that using the name of this trust, these people are showing misleading videos and distributing objectionable reading material among the poor class of the town and to convert them into Christianity.

Police said that these missionaries are abusing and insulting other religions and promoting Christianity  as supreme and magical.

In another news from Tahbarpur, Azamgarh district of Uttar Pradesh, an illegal mass conversion was planned at a Church after Sunday prayers, near the home of a convert named Bahawan Ram. Police reached the venue and busted the plan. The accused and many other people ran away when they saw police arriving. Bahawan Ram had adopted Christianity sometime back. He had constructed a Church in front of his home where prayers were conducted everyday, as reported in Hindi daily Amar Ujala.

The same report also talks about another conversion gang operating in  Gola Bazar of Devgaon, Azamgarh district area. A women named Aarti, wife of Bablu Seth was accused by people of luring others to convert. When police reached Aarti’s home, they found few other ladies named Dharma Devi, Radhika, Manju Chauhan and Rani who all claimed they meet to worship Jesus Christ but denied being involved in any conversion activity. When police took the matter to the SDM, she let the accused off with a warning and asked police to file a detailed report in the case.

Not long back, two other such cases of illegal conversion attempts by missionaries were reported from East UP. One from Jaunpur where missionaries kidnapped a Hindu girl and threatened her whole family to adopt Christianity. Another one from a village of Gorakhpur where a conversion racket under veil of curing diseases, was running in Harijan Colony.

It is to be noted that these Christian missionaries mainly target the gullible, emotionally, financially or physically suffering people in their trap. Most of the times, the neo-converts retain their Hindu names in order to lure more unsuspecting Hindus. By using fake faith healing and quackery techniques, they enchant the masses and play with gullible Hindus.

The upsurge in conversion racket in East UP could be a fallout of the fact that Gorakhpur-based Yogi Adityanath is now the CM of the entire state and has shifted to Lucknow. In the absence of a strong Hindu leader, the missionary mafia has definitely become more emboldened and appears to believe that CM Yogi Adityanath will find it difficult to crack down on them, lest he is accused of ‘bias and intolerance’ by the national media?

Interestingly, while operating in districts like Azamgarh, the missionary mafia avoids pockets of intense Muslim concentration. Therein lies another ‘secular’ lesson for Hindus who are under siege from Abrahamic fundamentalists and their left-liberal-secular enablers.
