Hindu man lynched in Deoria, UP over petty dispute with Muslim villagers

Jayprakash Kushwaha (55) was lynched to death in Uttar Pradesh’s Deoria district after he stopped Muslim children from pelting stones at a Jamun tree while he was grazing his cattle under it. Parents and other adult family members of the Muslim children got into an altercation with Jayaprakash and soon launched a brutal attack on him with swords, guns and sticks.

Jayprakash died while his son Manish(22) and brother Omprakash, who rushed to try and save him, were seriously injured. This has become just the latest incident in a never-ending series of lynchings & attacks on Hindus by Islamists, using some petty excuse as a pretext.

Hindu victims of mob attack by Muslim villagers in Deoria district, UP

Jayprakash who belonged to Itahua Chandauli village of Salempur, Deoria was a cattle farmer who was tending to his cattle on 27 June 2020. The neighbourhood kids were pelting stones at Jamun tree in his area which were hurting the cattle tethered there. When Jayprakash told them off, the kids called in their parents who started fighting with Jayprakash.

On hearing noises of violence, Jayprakash’s elder brother Omprakash and son Manish ran to rescue him but they were also thrashed by the Muslim mob. All three victims received injuries on their heads which locals believe indicates that the attack was not a light scuffle but a concerted effort to kill them all. After the attack, all the victims, including Kanhaiyya and Susheela Devi were brought to a local hospital where Jayprakash’s condition was deemed serious. He was referred to the district hospital but died on the way.

According to video testimony of his son Manish, the attackers were Aamir and Ishtiyaq’s family who with a premeditated intention, attacked them with swords, sticks and even took out a gun. Even women of the Muslim family participated in the brutal attack, it is alleged.

Police Confiscating Weapons Used in Attack

After news of the incident went viral, a crowd started gathering in the village and the situation became communally tense. Additional police force of 3 police stations and 2 platoons of PAC were deployed in the area to prevent any escalation. The villagers demanding swift arrest and capital punishment for the accused lodged their protest by keeping Jayprakash’s dead body on the road and refusing cremation till the administration assured them of justice.

CO Varun Mishra, ASP Shishyapal and other senior officers assured villagers of prompt action against the accused and pacified the crowd. Local MP Ravindra Kushwaha also reached the village and interacted with agitated villagers. It was only after his intervention that the villagers relented and cremated Jayprakash.

Meanwhile, police has arrested 7 accused- Ishtiyaq Ansari, Amina, Aamir, Ashiq, Arshad, Shafiq, Mukhtar under IPC sections 147, 148, 149, 302, 308, 323, 452, 504 & 506. The police is further investigating the case. The have also confiscated weapons purportedly used in the assault.

The Deoria incident is not an isolated case. Just 150 km away on the same day, Jaunpur also witnessed communal tension when some Muslim youths harassed Hindu girls sitting just outside their house. When the girls’ father objected to this, the youths turned abusive and thrashed four members of the girls’ family with sticks. Earlier in Hashimpur, Firoz, Ali, Mohsin & Shahrukh murdered Arun over an alleged love affair with a Muslim girl.

Such repeated cases clearly show that Hindus are unsafe in various pockets throughout the country. It is high-time the Indian state recognize this issue and deal with it.
