Former Andhra AG alleges political vendetta against him by the Jagan government

A former Advocate General (AG) of Andhra Pradesh (AP) who worked under the Chandrababu Naidu (CBN) regime has asked the High Court (HC) to intervene and restrain both the Central government and state police from taking any coercive action against him. He also sought a court-monitored investigation against irregular land allotment in Amravati when CBN was the Chief Minister (CM).

In his plea, Dammalapati Srinivas, appointed as the AG in May 2016, has alleged that CM Jagan Mohan Reddy has been behaving in a high-handed manner and disregarding the Constitution as well as the rule of law. He has also said that the state police agencies have been ordered to arrest him illegally without any FIR (First Information Report) so as to ensure that he (Srinivas) toes their line.

His petition also puts forward the allegation that attempts are being made by the state government to intimidate him and his relative by resorting to phone tapping, shadow policing, and attempting to create evidence through irrelevant inquiries.

According to him, this action is merely based on the “assumption” that he acquired a large area of land in the Guntur-Vijayawada region under the CBN regime when the previous government had decided to create a new greenfield capital city of Amravati in the region.

He believes that he is being made a scapegoat in the political score-settling between Reddy and Naidu. Srinivas has also made allegations of Reddy harboring a personal grudge considering the fact that the former was on the prosecution’s side when Jagan and his father YSR Reddy were facing trial in a CBI court in a case pertaining to illegal quid pro quo investments by certain companies during YSR’s chief ministerial term.

As per the CBI, certain corporates and individuals were forced to invest in Jagan’s companies in return for favors for the “invested kickback amounts”. 14 charge sheets had been filed by the CBI whereas the ED has registered around 12 cases against Jagan who had then been sent to 16 months of imprisonment.

In his petition, Srinivas mentions that it was on the basis of his plea filed in the HC that the Jagan case was transferred to the CBI and also that he (Srinivas) had appeared on behalf of Naidu in 2011 when counter-allegations of corruptions were made against the latter. The HC had dismissed the allegations made against Naidu as mere settling of political scores.

Srinivas’ petition states that the Jagan Reddy government is indulging in targeted harassment by filing false charges against his critics. He also alleges that attempts are being made to “frame” him only because he happened to be the representative of the Naidu government in various cases.

Furthermore, according to Srinivas, he has been informed by “reliable sources” that the Jagan government is trying to detain him illegally on fabricated charges and without any formal FIR being filed against him by the police in this regard.
