Evangelist who offered money to abuse Hindu deities arrested in Varanasi

Man who tried to lure Hindus into conversion has been arrested in Varanasi. He is said to have offered money to women in return for abusing Hindu deities. After the locals lodged a complaint against him, Varanasi police arrested him on September 1.

The evangelist, ironically named Ramachandra, was booked under sections of the Prohibition of Unlawful Religious Conversion Ordinance by Kotwali police after a local hindu man Jittu Sonkar filed a complaint against him. Ramachandra is said to have been actively proselytising in Saraimandraj and the neighbourhoods of Kartalpur for the past three months.

As per the locals’ claims he would initially talk to people about ending superstition and later brainwash them into converting to Christianity by preaching and distributing tracts. Police recovered Christian literature from his residence while arresting him. TOI reported the complainant Jittu Sonkar as saying. “Ramachandra was motivating people to embrace Christianity. When he started addressing Hindu deities in abusive terms locals opposed him. He then offered Rs.500 for each person present there”.

Another report claims that Ramachandra lured poor women, especially from SC/ST community into conversion and offered them Rs. 500 to abuse Hindu deities. He also convinced them to convert saying that Jesus will rescue them from poverty. As per the report Inspector in-charge Brahmadin Pandey said, “He had been pressurising the poor family members in Kartalpur to convert for the past several months.”
