DMK functionary builds shopping complex in the birthplace of Vaishnavaite saint

A DMK functionary has been accused of building a shopping complex in the birthplace of Vaishnavite saint Thirumazhisai Azhwar. Devotees and Hindu organisations have protested this attempt to encroach the space and filed a complaint with the HRCE.

The DMK politician is reportedly constructing a permanent structure on the land while there is no permission to do so. HRCE officials have said that the rented land cannot be used to build permanent structures. DMK politicians are infamous for land grabbing and the incident has exposed the DMK government’s fake concern for Hindus.

Thirumazhisai Azhwar, one of the 12 Vaishnavaite saint poets, was born in Thirumazhisai, a small town in Chennai. He is believed to have lived in the 7th century and is considered to be the reincarnation of Sudarshana Chakram of Maha Vishnu. Even though he was born to Bhargava rishi and his wife Kankangi, he was raised by a tribal childless couple. He learnt about all the different schools of thought including Naathikam(atheism) and had composed poems about Eshwara as well.

But after he met another great Azhwar Pey Azhwar, he was initiated as a Vaishnavaite. He espoused the greatness of Maha Vishnu over other deities in one of his poems after learning about all schools of thoughts in Hindu dharma. When his disciple was ordered to leave Kanchipuram by the then king, Thirumazhisai Azhwar had also left with his student. While leaving the city he called upon the presiding deity of Thiruvekka temple left along with them.

Only when the king realised his mistake and requested the disciple to return to Kanchipuram, the Azhwar and the deity returned. To this day the presiding deity of the temple is known as ‘Sonna vannam Seitha Perumal’- meaning ‘the Lord who acted as told’. Such a great saint’s birthplace is now allegedly being encroached by a DMK functionary.

Thirumazhisai Azhwar was born in a place called Madavilagam in Thirumazhisai. The Jagannatha Perumal temple in the town has a separate sannidhi for him. The land parcel, where he is believed to have been born , is considered as a sacred place. Devotees throng there on his janma nakshatram to do puja and sing bhajans.

It is said that even though the property is under the control of HRCE, construction activities are not allowed there. However a DMK functionary is said to have got the land on lease and is building a shopping complex. Shocked by this, devotees have reached out to the HRCE Executive Officer to take necessary action against the politician.

Dinamalar, a Tamil daily, reported the EO as saying, “One can rent a property from the HRCE. But there is no permit to build permanent structures on it. We have warned the person who is building a permanent structure on the birthplace of Thirumazhisai Azhwar to not do so. We will inspect the place and take necessary action”.

The DMK government has been claiming that it is not anti-Hindu and that encroached temple lands will be retrieved and put to use in their rule. However their actions so far have proved that they have a hidden agenda. While they claimed to build colleges on temple lands to generate revenue for temples, it has raised eyebrows as 2 of the colleges are to be built in Kolathur and Tiruchendur, constituencies of MK Stalin and his sister Kanimozhi.

Kanimozhi an atheist and Geeta Jeevan, a Christian were included in the council to choose land for the HRCE run colleges. The colleges are being set up in rented buildings and staff have already been appointed. Temple activists have filed PILs against this misuse of temple funds as the HRCE Act doesn’t give rights to the board to spend temple funds for non religious purposes. A Muslim man has gone to the court against appointing only Hindus in these colleges.

The issue was raked up by Dravidar Kazhagam, the mother organisation of DMK. DK chief Veeramani had termed it discrimination and asked the HRCE minister and the CM to appoint non-Hindus as well. While the HRCE minister gloats about having recovered temple lands worth more than 2000 crores, his own party functionary is encroaching not just any land, but the birthplace of an Azhwar.
