Dalit girl gang-raped by 4 Muslim youth, father threatened and assaulted

In a shocking case, a Dalit Hindu family is being victimized by rapists in Etah, Uttar Pradesh. The accused not only abducted and gang-raped a minor girl, but the next day threatened and beat up her father when he confronted them.

It was only after support from Hindu activists that the father gained the courage to file an FIR and the accused were arrested. The 4 rapists have been identified as Arif, Haseen, Shahil, Muhammad while those accused of assaulting the father are Arif, Hasmuddin, Thasu, Shahid, Aamir.

The girl was reportedly lured from her home to nearby Firozabad, where she was gang-raped and a video recorded of the act, before being dropped back.

The girl was initially too shocked to say anything but later she confided in her mother and told her about her ordeal. The next day, the girl’s father got a call from the accused and while hurling caste slurs they threatened to leak the obscene video and kill the family if he dared file a case against them.

This case is quite similar to the recent Alwar rape case, in which a Brahmin Hindu family was targeted – there the father was found hanging in suspicious circumstances after he was pressurized to withdraw the police case lodged against the Meo Muslim neighbours who had gang-raped his minor daughter for over a year.

As per the police complaint filed by the girl’s father, Arif and others came to his house on 1st July when he was out for work and his wife had also gone to the market. They told the girl that her dad is unwell and they will take her to him. While they were travelling, she again asked about her father and the accused told her that he has been taken to Firozabad. In Firozabad, they took her to a marriage party where they got drunk and raped the girl. They also made an objectionable video of her. Later they dropped her home.

The next day the father got the threatening call, and when he enquired about it in the colony, the accused beat him up and deleted call details from his phone. After this, the father filed a case on 6th July with Etah police with the support of pro-Hindu activists who brought the attention of senior police officers to it. The police has since arrested 5 accused under section 363, 366, 354(A), 506, 507, 323, 8/12 & 3(2) 5 SC/ST Act in FIR number 185/2020.

Despite the brazenness shown by the accused and crime being committed against a Dalit girl of the same community as a prominent local Dalit leader, there has not been much media coverage of the incident. Neither have self-appointed leaders of Dalit community like Bhim Army come in support of the victim family. It is only thanks to people like Karunesh Shukla & Nitin Shukla of Mission Humanity NGO that the aggrieved can now fight a legal battle and hope for justice.
