Corona positive brother of Jamaati who died in Telangana attacks hospital staff

The entire world is under the terrible grip of the coronavirus pandemic and Bharat is no exception. Putting themselves in the line of fire are doctors and other healthcare workers who are working day and night exposing themselves to the disease and putting their families at risk too. However, jamaatis seem to have no appreciation for the selfless service of these unsung heroes and they continue doing what they are known best for – arrogance and highhandedness.

In a shocking incident the brother of a deceased coronavirus patient resorted to violence by attacking doctors and destroying hospital property at Hyderabad’s Gandhi hospital. As per news reports, either due to negligence or ignorance the patient contracted coronavirus and was admitted to Gandhi hospital. However, by that time the patient’s condition became serious and he lost his life. It is crystal clear that despite the efforts of the doctors, the patient lost his life due to the delay on the latter’s part to seek treatment on time.

Angered by the death, however, the patient’s brother went on a rampage in the hospital. The police have registered a case against the attacker but since he himself tested positive for corona, he has been admitted to a chest hospital and quarantined. The two siblings belong to Nizamabad district. It is being said that they had arrived from Delhi 10 days ago and had already tested positive for the virus. Besides creating a ruckus in the hospital, the deceased patient’s brother even threatened to leave the premises despite knowing that he is a corona positive patient.

With great difficulty, doctors reached out to the police for help. However, since the attacker himself was a corona patient the police were unable to intervene immediately as they had to take sufficient precautions. The doctors then approached the Commissioner of Police (CP) Anjani Kumar who intervened and ensured that he was arrested and sent to another hospital where he has been quarantined at present. Doctors have asked for sufficient police protection following the incident. It is important to mention here that doctors have been working round the clock and some have not returned to their homes but are residing in the hospital campus to avoid putting their families at risk. Attacking doctors who are working under such difficult is nothing but criminal.

This cannot be brushed off as an isolated incident as there is ample precedence to prove that this is an attitudinal problem. In an incident dating to 2019 two junior doctors were attacked and brutally assaulted by a mob of 200 when an elderly patient died at Kolkata’s NRS Hospital. Similar assaults on doctors were reported from Burdwan and Midnapore forcing doctors in West Bengal to go on a strike demanding better protection from the state government. Even amid this pandemic when doctors are putting their heart and soul into providing relief to those affected to the best of their abilities, there are people like AIMIM MLA Maulana Mufti who cannot keep away from showing their muscle power. In a horrifying incident Mufti and his supporters attacked hospital staff and property in Malegaon only because his calls went unanswered by an already overworked hospital staff.

Only strict punishments would serve as a reminder to such rogue elements that attacks on those risking their lives to save that of others will not be tolerated.
