CAPF jawan receives death threats allegedly from TMC workers in Canning, West Bengal

In shocking news coming from West Bengal, TMC workers have allegedly threatened a Bengali man working in the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) of dire consequences upon his return home. “Return home, we will kill you,” is the threat the Bengali jawan has received, as reported by news site TheNewsBangla.com. What is more shocking is that the threats are said to be coming not from any “goons” but directly from party workers of the ruling dispensation.

Debashish Mandal is a resident of the Canning area of South 24 Parganas. Canning is a Muslim-dominated, communally-charged area. It was the epicentre of the 2013 pogrom against Bengali Hindus after a Muslim cleric was murdered by unidentified assailants, when a heavily armed 10,000-strong Muslim mob burned down 200 Hindu homes and looted Hindu shops throughout Naliakhali, Gopalpur, Goladogra and Herobhanga areas.

Canning had become a talking point during the 2021 Bengal elections as well after a violent Muslim mob attacked the CRPF jawans deployed in the area to ensure fair elections. The attack occurred on April 3rd after controversial TMC MLA Saokat Molla concluded addressing his supporters. After the speech, this crowd launched unprovoked attacks on the CRPF jawans and also injured media personnel covering the violence.

Debashish Mandal has complained that he is being targeted for being a BJP supporter. He further alleges that he was forced to leave his house soon after the election results were out and West Bengal was under siege with Trinamool cadres inflicting mass violence on Hindu supporters of BJP across the state. Mandal has not returned to his home in Kumarsha village since that time, and is deployed elsewhere for now.

“I have ailing parents at home. I am being abused and threatened on the phone and social media that they will kill me if I return home. They are trying to weaken me mentally,” alleged Mandal who belongs to the SC/ST community. He also claims that the followers of the local MLA are behind these threats and states that he will file a complaint with the local police station and report these threats to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

On the other hand, the accusation made by the central police personnel has been rubbished by the TMC as a conspiracy to ‘harm TMC’s image’.
