BSF Officer Deepak Mondal Critically Injured By Cattle Smugglers in Tripura

A senior Border Security Force (BSF) officer, deputy commandant Deepak Mondal of the 145th battalion, sustained severe injuries after a group of cattle smugglers attacked him in Tripura yesterday. Mandal was targeted after he intercepted a large group of smugglers carrying cows illegally into Bangladesh. The BSF officer’s condition in critical and he has been airlifted to Kolkata for medical attention.

India Today has reported that Mondal, who was also the officiating in-charge of the 145 battalion deployed in Tripura, was travelling between different border outposts of the BSF to check the preparedness and the night domination drill when the incident took place. It was around 2 am when he saw at least 25 cattle smugglers and intervened.

While Mondal, his guard and the driver were waiting for reinforcement, the smugglers gheraoed them and beat them up. The 25-member gang was armed with sticks, bricks and machetes. The constable had to fire a few rounds in the air to disperse the mob.

The mob rammed their jeep into the BSF officer, which is why he sustained severe head and leg injuries

India Today correspondent Jugal Purohit has provided additional details in a tweet thread

  • In border area near Belardeppa, Sonamura Dist Sipahijala, Tripura, this officer, his guard and driver saw about 25 armed smugglers, sought reinforcement and intervened before smugglers fled.
  • In what only displays their soaring spirit, these machete-wielding smugglers attacked the team and rammed their vehicle on the officer.
  • Mondal was hit from behind by a Bolero vehicle being used by smugglers , severely injuring him on his head and legs.
  • Mondal was saved when his colleague, constable Chandrakant fired 5 rounds IN AIR from his AK-47 to disperse smugglers. (Why in air and not on smugglers?)
  • Sources point to a bloody situation along Indo-Bangla border. Data of BSF men injured: ’13 – 112, ’14 – 88, ’15 – 102, ’16 – 109, ’17 – 71
  • BSF men killed while taking on smugglers along the Indo-Bangla international border: 2013 – 3, 2014 – 1, 2015 – 2, 2016 – nil, 2017 – 2
  • Home Ministry on the smugglers killed by BSF: 26 in 2016-17, 24 in 15-16, 26 in 14-15, 36 in 13-14, 43 in 12-13 (INCLUDES PAK & BANGLA BORDER)
  • 2IC Mondal is THE MOST SENIOR OFFICER to be attacked by cattle smugglers along Indo-Bangla border.

Why did AK-47 wielding Constable Not Fire On Smugglers?

There is a one-word answer to this million-dollar question – liberalism. Paramilitary forces like BSF, CRPF etc know that the hold of the liberal-secular mindset on our State Institutions is so powerful that they tread on egg shells when it comes to using deadly force.

Even in such a life-threatening situation, BSF Constable Chandrakant still didn’t feel empowered enough to fire at the smugglers, but only fired in the air. The India Today video embedded above provides the answer – BSF sources told the channel that in the past, when BSF personnel used force against smugglers, they themselves landed in the dock with their superiors and civil administration.

Our forces dread the following:

  • The local secular ruling class in sensitive border states. West Bengal CM Mamta Banerjee has made it abundantly clear where her loyalties lie in the fight between cattle smugglers and the BSF – when rioting mobs attacked BSF vehicles in the 2016 Kaliachak, Malda riots, the CM dismissed the entire incident as a “tiff between locals and BSF”! Tripura has been ruled by CPM CM Manik Sarkar since 1998 – the indifferent Communist attitude towards our forces and their indulgence of cattle smuggling for votebank politics is well known.
  • Corrupt top bosses in both BSF and local administration. It is clear that the cattle smuggling mafia has greased many palms and hence continues to operate with full impunity.
  • The bleeding-heart liberals and Lutyens’ elite waiting to pounce on the forces at the slightest whiff of decisive action. The jawans know that a top-notch lawyers’ club (Sibals, Narimans, Dhawans, Grovers etc) can rip apart their careers if they get caught in any shooting at ‘civilians’ (the prevailing consensus in Lutyens’ Delhi is that if Bharat’s security forces shoot dead anyone – whether a smuggler on Indo-Bangladesh border or stone pelter in Kashmir – the person has to be innocent). It is for this reason that AFSPA is so critical as it allows the Army to operate with a free hand in troubled areas. It is time that AFSPA scope is broadened to allow free hand to BSF in border areas too.

It is time that Home Minister Rajnath Singh truly reformed and empowered the forces responsible for our internal security.
