Attempt to desecrate a temple murti by Islamists in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu

The state of Tamil Nadu – considered by many to be one of the few states of Bharat which is free of communal violence – has been seeing a steady rise of Islamic terrorism in the past two decades. Tamil Nadu is being ruled by the Dravidian parties, which are based on the philosophy of atheism, for the past 50 years and has seen many anti-Hindu elements being promoted by the government. Though the philosophy of atheism is based on the non-existence of the supreme-being, the atheism of Dravidian parties is largely restricted to abusing Hindu gods and festivals while those of the minorities are promoted and celebrated. This has given rise to many attacks on Hindus both socially and physically.

Recently, 4 Muslim men were arrested for trying to desecrate a temple murti at Kuniyapattur near Coimbatore. The accused apparently entered the temple to break the murti on the night of April 1, 2017 but were seen by a local resident Saravanakumar who alerted the localites by shouting “Theives”, making them desert the spot.

The 4 accused were arrested on the basis of the complaint given by the executive officer of the temple Sri. Palanisamy at Kuniyapattur police station. They were identified as Ibrahim (33), Muhammad Nishar (27), Abu Qadir (33) and Muhammad Rafiq (31). The police also got hold of the iron rod which was used by the Islamists in their effort to desecrate the murti. The accused were presented at the court on April 4, 2017 after which they were sent to Coimbatore central prison.

Incidentally, such incidents of murtis of Hindu dieties being targeted by fanatical Muslims are quite frequent, and reflect the vehement Quranic injunctions against idol-worship which is considered an ‘unforgivable sin’ in Abrahamic religions like Islam and Christianity.

Quran [4:48] GOD does not forgive idolatry, if maintained under death, but He forgives lesser offenses for whomever He wills. Anyone who sets up idols beside GOD, has forged a horrendous offense.

Quran [39:65] It has been revealed to you, and to those before you that if you ever commit idol worship, all your works will be nullified, and you will be with the losers.

Fundamentalist Islam in Tamil Nadu

The rise of the Islamist menace in Tamil Nadu can be traced back to the 1998 Coimbatore bombings which killed about 58 people and injured more than 200. The bombings were apparently in retaliation to the earlier riots in the city in November – December the previous year, in which 18 Muslims, allegedly involved in the murder of a traffic policeman named Selvaraj by a member of the Islamist terror group Al Ummah, were killed. The main conspirator was found to be S. A. Basha, the founder of Al Ummah, an Islamic fundamentalist body. Investigators found out that the blasts were a part of larger conspiracy to target Sri. Lal Krishna Advani, the leader of BJP on that day at 4 PM in his election meeting.

The trial of the case began on 7 March 2002 and as many as 1,300 witnesses were examined. S. A. Basha, the mastermind of the blasts, was found guilty of hatching a criminal conspiracy to trigger a series of explosions on 14 February 1998 and to create enmity between the two communities. In 2007, the trial court found 158 accused guilty, while seven were acquitted. Basha, the chief conspirator was awarded life sentence and his aide, Mohammad Ansari, was awarded twin life sentences that run concurrently.

Abdul Nasser Madani, founder of radical Isalmist party PDP in Kerala, was controversially acquitted to the dismay of victim’s families. Madani had earlier sought bail stating ‘health grounds’ – the way Congress & Left governments in Kerala called for his release during the trial period, and ruling DMK’s soft-pedaling on the issue marks another dark spot in the history of secular politics in Bharat.

Following this, revision petitions were filed in the Madras High Court, asking for the acquittal of all those who were convicted – these were struck down by the court. These petitions were supported by the Dravidian Parties and one of the founders of Al Ummah, M. H. Jawaharullah, was even allowed to contest in the Tamil Nadu legislative elections on behalf of the ADMK coalition under Selvi J. Jayalalithaa in 2011, and on behalf of the DMK coalition under M. Karunanidhi in 2016. This incident of shame was also raised by the current UP Chief Minister Sri Yogi Adityanath while he was speaking about the silence of Congress and other parties on various Jihadi attacks on Hindus.

While the leaders of the Dravidian parties abuse Hindus and their practices by labeling them as non- sense, they gladly attend the iftaar and Christmas parties shedding their philosophy of atheism, making it largely restricted only to Hindus. The fact that they are not hesitating to form an electoral alliance with an organization promoting Jihad shows that the policies of Dravidian parties are not based on atheism but on promoting anti-Hindu elements. It’s high time that Hindus in Tamil Nadu realized this fact and started realizing the losses they have faced in these 50 years of Dravidian rule.
