Assam Teacher Pressurized to Convert, Eat Beef & Marry Her Muslim Colleague, Threatened With Rape

A Hindu teacher from Morigaon, Assam has alleged that she has constantly been mentally harassed by fellow Muslim teachers of her school to convert to Islam, eat beef and marry a Muslim. When she resisted, she was molested and threatened with rape and murder.

Usha Das joined the government-run Lalipar Boys Lower Primary School in Morigaon district, around 85 km from state capital Guwahati, in July last year. The school is in a remote and Muslim-majority area.

She said that the assistant teacher, A Ali, was asking her to get married to him even though he himself was married and had a child studying in class 9. He had even asked her to eat beef even after knowing that she was a Hindu.

Usha Das said that since the school was at least 5 kilometres away from her home, A Ali used to drop her from home to school and school to home. One day Ali had asked her to get married to him so that it became easier for them both to travel to the school. She said, “Initially I took this as a joke but when this used to happen on a regular basis, I decided to make a complaint to his wife. Even she took the matter as a joke. Later on I made a complaint to the headmaster, Nurul Islam who is his brother, but Islam also turned my complaint down and asked me to get married to a businessman from Lahorighat.”

She added that these things seemed planned as this began only three months ago but before that everything was going good. Things turned worse when two months ago while returning home, Ali asked Usha to wait for him and she was shocked when after sometime he came with a bowl of beef and offered it to her.

“When I refused to eat the beef, he told me that many non-Muslims eat beef and it was ok if I ate too. We had a quarrel regarding the issue and after that things got heated up,” she said.

She further added that later on both the headmaster and assistant teacher were harassing her mentally and they had even blocked her out from the washroom by locking the washroom at the school premises. She said Ali stopped dropping her home and thus she had to walk to the school where even the local youths harassed her.

When she complained to the School Management Committee, she was rebuked by several of its members, who claimed that she was maligning the image of the now accused.

“When it dawned on them as well as fellow teachers that I was looking for a transfer, they threatened me with dire consequences, to the extent that I could be raped and killed outside the school,” said Das.

Tense and frustrated, she wrote to the Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and Education Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for action. Now a probe finally seems to have been ordered, which will be carried out by the Assam police.

Muslim MLA brands teacher as a liar

The local MLA from Dhing constituency, Aminul Islam from Maulana Badruddin Ajmal’s AIUDF party, has termed the lady teacher’s statement as ‘suspicious’ and motivated by a desire to get transfer from the school. He made this statement in Assam Assembly, while also calling for an enquiry into the matter.

Similar Cases

Local Assamese media is reporting that this is not the first instance of a Hindu teacher raising the issue of harassment at hands of Muslim colleagues. In the news clip below, another teacher Simpy Sakia has been mentioned as having undergone similar harassment.

In June, HinduPost had reported on the shocking rape and murder of a 58-year-old Hindu teacher near Jamunamukh in Nagaon district of middle Assam – two men, Moinul Hoque and Salimuddin, were arrested for that crime. That news sunk without a trace in ‘national’ media which is obsessed instead with matters like ‘disappearance’ of JNU student Najeeb Ahmed.

As per census 2011, Assam has witnessed the highest accretion of 3.31% in the Muslim share for any State over the 2001-11 period. Muslims account for 34.22% of the total population of Assam, and their concentration is especially high in lower Assam and parts of North Assam like Morigaon and Nagaon. Their share is 90 percent in Laharighat of Morigaon.

  1. It is important to retaliate. Muslim aggression thrives on Hindu non-retaliation. Retaliate in your own small way—bring up Mohammed’s pedophilia, his rapes, his “ghazwas” when you are with your Muslim colleagues.
