Yet another tragic case of grooming jihad has claimed a young life, this time in West Bengal. In July, the dead body of a 14-year-old girl Pamela Adhikari was found hanging from the ceiling fan of her house in West Bengal’s Howrah city. The shocking sight was discovered by her family members who then reported the incident to the Bali police station.
The minor was a student of class 8 and a Karate player who had participated in national-level tournaments. Police recovered a suicide note from the site. The deceased had written the password of her smartphone on her palm with which the police could access her phone. Pamela was a beautiful young girl with a penchant for taking pictures of herself and posting pictures and short videos on social media; she was very active on Instagram as well. Family members of the deceased share that Pamela had also started receiving modelling offers.
According to West Bengal police, the deceased was being blackmailed by a youth whom she had befriended online. The accused named Sheikh Taruf had introduced himself to Pamela as Sunny.
Pamela’s family says that Taruf had contacted her under the pretext of offering her modelling assignments, and it appears the two soon got involved in a relationship. During this time, Pamela didn’t know about Sheikh Taruf’s real identity or any other details about his life. Though Taruf is 19, he is already married but Pamela was oblivious to this. He managed to click some objectionable pictures of their intimate moments.
When Pamela learned of Taruf’s marriage, she wanted to end the relationship. This angered the accused and he started to blackmail the minor with the objectionable pictures and threatened to make those viral. The teenager was pushed into a state of acute mental depression due to the constant blackmailing and threats by the accused and was compelled to take the extreme step.
Her suicide note stated she had decided to kill herself as she couldn’t bear the blackmailing by Sheikh Taruf aka Sunny anymore, informed the police. This was her only way to escape social stigma and embarrassment, she mistakenly thought.
West Bengal police have registered a case of abetment to suicide against Sheikh Taruf who was found absconding following Pamela’s suicide. A search operation was undertaken by the authorities to nab him and he was soon arrested from Gholsi police station area in East Burdwan.
Assaults on Hindu girls and women are at an all-time high in WB, and the state’s inaction has further emboldened elements like Sheikh Taruf. The much derided anti-conversion laws introduced in some states to prevent religious fanatics from entrapping girls and then forcing them to convert/marry have provided some much-needed relief to beleaguered Hindu families, but even those laws are now being challenged in courts and judiciary’s left-liberal proclivities are well known. We require a mass awakening in Hindu society to protect our children from such predators.
