New Telugu film ‘Uppena’ is virulently anti-Hindu, say moviegoers

The recently released Telugu-language film ‘Uppena’ (meaning high tide) has been called out for its anti-Hindu content by moviegoers. The romantic drama written and directed by debutant Bucchi Babu Sana and produced by Sukumar in collaboration with Naveen Yerneni and Y. Ravi Shankar, features debutants Panja Vaisshnav Tej and Krithi Shetty in the lead roles, with Vijay Sethupathi playing the antagonist.

Set in coastal Andhra (Kakinada), the plot follows Aasi (Tej), a Christian fisherman who stalks Bebamma (Shetty) for 10 years, since she is a minor, and finally the two of them fall in love when she reaches college. Her father Raayanam (Sethupathi) is a rich zamindar (feudal lord) who is a staunch casteist and doesn’t hesitate to kill people from other castes, as per a NewsMinute review. The film has been declared a box-office hit and a super-duper success by the Telugu film fraternity it seems.

So the basic plot seems centred on a current favourite theme of Bharat’s movie makers – a girl belonging to an ‘upper caste’ falls in love with a ‘lower caste’ and tensions ensue between their families. The modification here is that the hero is a Christian from a humble fishing family, in contrast with the wealthy, ruthless, caste supremacist Hindu father of the heroine.

That alone would be enough to tell us about the stereotypical Hindumisia of the film, but wait..there’s more, lot’s more.

Let’s list out the points made in the tweet above

1.) Christian Pastor addresses grama devatha (Hindu village deity) in a derogatory manner.

2.) In crime scenes, the camera zooms on Hindu Gods.

3.) Hindu girls portrayed as lustful, Christian hero is innocent.

4.) Bashir Amma Urs (death anniversary of a Sufi saint) – Hindus worshipping at grave, serene and peaceful scene.

5.) Christian hero harassed in Hindu village festival.

6.) In amorous and explicit sexual scenes, walls are plastered with photos of Hindu Gods

7.) In climax, derogatory remark on Lord Shiva.

8.) Hindus portrayed as living only for caste supremacy

9.) Hero incurred wrath of God as he did not read Bible.

10.) Heroine desires to be married in Puri temple but goes on to live with a Christian without any marriage ceremony.

11.) Bus driver portraying Tripund (Hindu Shaivite tilak) takes bribe from Hindu girl to go around with a Christian.

12.) Hindu characters portrayed as sex maniacs, masturbators.

13.) Entire Gangaputra fishermen community portrayed as Christians.

14.) Hero converts to Christianity and is abused by villain with casteist slurs (this part is not clear as hero is a born-Christian going by most reviews, so who is shown as converting?)

Imagine such a movie being released in a state and region grappling with a raging problem of Christian conversion mafia running amok with alleged state backing! Where many informed observers claim that 25% of population is already Christian and where Hindus are reeling from a spate of unprecedented attacks against their temples! Such a movie gets released with zero protests from Hindu religious organisations or ordinary Hindus. And on the other hand, we have Christian and Muslim organisations take up cudgels at the smallest of scenes which they find objectionable.

Here’s the bottomline – if you thought that critics of Hindu Dharma only have a problem with ‘casteism’ or what they cleverly term as ‘Brahmanism’, think again. That is just the superficial position – they don’t want Hindu society to overcome whatever social ills exist, as they do in some form or other in all human societies.

Our critics hate everything about Hindu Dharma and Hindu society, as Uppena illustrates: Even the empowering concept of grama devatha or village guardian diety which is most often a Goddess! Or the acceptance of kama (human desires) as one of the 4 purusharthas (goals) of human life – with artha (wealth), Dharma (righteous conduct, service to society) and moksha (liberation from cycle of birth and death) being the other 3! Or portraying the lack of a central authority which enforces a strict moral code as the reason for Hindus behaving in a degenerate, irrational manner!

Despite the anti-Hindu agenda being so open, so blatantly in your face, movie reviewers pretend as if its just business as usual! The masses, hooked as they or on the opium of movie star fandom, also pretend to be oblivious to the denigration of their culture and religion.

The anti-Hindu virus has now well and truly infected all forms of entertainment media – whether it is Bollywood or regional language cinema, or multi-lingual web series on OTT platforms. Unless Hindus across the country realise the true scale and depth of the forces aligned against them and stand up in unison, the future looks bleak.

  1. Many have found anti hindu elements in this film symbolizes many factors. I am being a researcher in the subject of Christianizing of Hindu gods found many glitches that lead me to go into further details.

    1. Hindi/Bollywood audience were inclined towards South films show only the appreciation to the filmmakers for their diverse approach for the production of films from all our south film industries.

    2. But, the reality is far different when it comes to south films. People were enjoying the wide range of films but forgot to even think about CHRISTIANIZING OF FILMS. Yes! Almost all of malayalam films are Pro-Muslim, Pro-Christian. Understand the psychology of filmmaking, they have choosen a dififerent path to make people believe that they are authentic and superior. They may not mock hindus in films but instead they project the absence of hindus or make their own version of hindu character according to thier story or plot design.

They show muslims are peacefuls & christians are saviours. Consuming beef is normalized in Malayalam films. Even in most of local interviews about beef ban, people are opposed to that decision and enjoy their meal Beef-Parota only at Rs.100.

They made people lazy, greedy, lusty & needy these 4 qualities are the four axes to break the legs, hands & neck of Hinduism in Andhra, Tamilnadu & Kerala. other regions like Telangana & Karnataka are on the borderline to fall in the trap. Uppena story established on the coastal region of Andhra Pradesh.

    3. There are only a few telugu films which projects or mocks Hindus gods. But the real issue lies who is leading or normalizing such acts? Andhra CM Jagan Mohan himself is a christian and supporting such films and filmmakers indirectly. AP Govt. had even deployed many crypto christians as workers in Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam, Tirumala. those workers make thinghs complicated, when they are in Swamivari Sannidhi they must chant Govinda but they won’t instead, they pull you off from that place. Not public chants are allowed in the premises of Lord Venkateshwara premises. This is what the situation of Hindus everywhere in South.

I would like to mention few other telugu films which tried to mock Hindu gods and I’m halfway thru the research.

C/O Kancharapalem – Telugu Film Directed by Venkatesh Maha was released in 2018. This film was a huge success in both telugu states for its unique story presentation & songs. But one particular scene in this film reminded me of Christians core principle of hating idol worshippers. This is what had shown in this film, when the mischevious kid worsen the situation for his love, he prays for ganesha but all goes in vain & on other side, his actions leads to his dad’s death, who makes ganesh idols during chaturthi. This kid gets frustated on his attempt to get his love and as a dissappointed idiot just destroys the Ganesh idol that lord hasn’t fulfilled his wishes and becomes athiest.

The director of this film hails from Vijayawada, AP which is considered as a sacred place for Hindus where peple pray for Kanakaduurgamma. But this place is also famous for churches & sunday prayers.

The second film directed by Venkatesh Maha was Uma Maheshwara Ugra Roopasya was a malayalam movie remake. There are no scenes such hindus or hindu deities getting mocked but instead, this film projects and shows how great is Christian religion is! Of course this may be a remake but the both filmmakers from malayalam and telugu share same ideology. There’s a particular scene where a Hindu Ayurvedic Healer misunderstands the friendship between a boy and a girl. This particular scene mocks the entire stereotype of that generation.

Again, The same director Venkatesh Maha had played a cameo role in a telugu film called Standup Rahul, which the story is all about the life of a standup comedian. Venkatesh maha again mocks Hindu groups, traditions, culture & elder generation in a scene comedy show as standup comedian. not less than any of the today’s munawar, garima, sebastain and all other who took the stage to normalize, make fun of our traditions.

On the other side people have no sensitive feelings over such films. Today this impacted in their attempt to normalize breaking idols, wokeism, mocking hindu gods & traitons has successfully deployed into the minds of an average person who can’t even raise their voice against such mockery.

Pro-Christian & Pro-Muslim content is being promoted in OTT and as well as mainstream media. But at the same time we ourselves are supporting and accepting their mockery of our ancestry & has lost the sense of reacting to such idiotic acts and instead we laugh. This may bounce back at some point of time in the future. I fear that future is not so far away from us.

    4. Apart from telugu films, almost all of tamil & malayalam films promote such content. The most recent films such as Mukuthi Amman(Nayantara) & Jai Bhim(Suriya) – is roughly inspired from preiyar principles and also promotes Anti Brahmanism. Please refer to other articles on the internet how negative characters in Jai Bhim has been changed to hindu names when the real ones are christian. This is to mislead people and make us foroget what we are!
