In a horrific incident, a Brahmin youth was forced to drink urine after having his Janeu (sacred thread) cut off in Uttar Pradesh’s (UP) Deoria. He was also given death threats following a land dispute between the two parties.
News reports state that the youth Anish Chandra Dwivedi was thrashed severely by assaulters who then tied up his hands and feet and cut off his janeu. However, the accused were not satisfied with this cruelty of theirs and went on to force Dwivedi to drink urine.
Dwivedi was headed to Deoria to bring his father when the accused assaulted him. It has also been learned that after the video went viral on social media (SM), officials rushed to the place and arrested three people in this regard. The police have arrested Vinod Yadav, Satish Yadav, and another person in this matter.
Further investigations are going on in this issue. However, this incident has distressed the Brahmin community as a whole who were just recovering from the shock of a Brahmin being killed after he was set on fire in Saharanpur. Following both the incidents and rising instances of such assaults on the community, Rashtriya Vipra Ekta Manch representatives met the Deputy District Officer Vijay Kumar Sharma and submitted a petition asking for strict action against the perpetrators and also ensuring that such incidents are not repeated.
While there was ample focus on the Hathras incident where media stressed on the victim’s Dalit identity, such incidents never make it to the national headlines and are never even reported, let alone being discussed, by the Lutyens media.
It must be remembered that despite the caste differences that exist in Bharat, not all crimes are caste-related. In fact, feudal orders exist in all agrarian societies, and the ground reality in Bharat today is far different than say 3-4 decades back. The complex interplay between different social groups based on economic muscle, local politics, and other factors is beyond the black & white ‘upper caste’ vs ‘lower caste’ worldview of journalism schools.
The selective outrage of the Lutyens media on the basis of the caste of the victims and/or accused is both condemnable and undesirable, to say the least.
