Asianet News digital head insults Amul and Patel community

The controversial news network Asianet News is back in the news, this time for insulting national icon Amul and the Patel community. The latest rhetoric came from Aby Tharakan, Asianet’s digital head, who tweeted that it’s ‘better to drink dog milk than Patel milk’. By Patel, he is hinting at Amul and Gujarat.

Aby’s comments came along with an animated video showing Lakshadweep Administrator Praful Khoda Patel riding an imaginary cow that is wearing a neck tag that said ‘Amul’. Communists and other malcontents are trying their best to portray the current state of affairs in the Lakshadweep islands off the coast of Kerala as a tug of war between the Union territory and Bharat, with only Kerala for their support!

Amul has ventured into markets overseas and is a beacon of successful co-operative socialism, the type that communist leaders in Kerala preach but are yet to deliver. Amul sold products worth Rs. 40,000 crore rupees, last financial! Nationalist Keralites in Gujarat (some even work for Amul) consider Amul as their country’s own, an iconic brand that unites the nation.

To meet excess demand, Kerala buys milk from neighboring states, every day. Even MILMA (the Kerala Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation) admits on its website that “The efficiency of the Amul Model was worth replication”.

Obviously, Aby and Asianet do not think so. Aby deflected criticism of his comment by claiming it is a ‘campaign song’, but was silent on the racist and derogatory tone. The question is, will Asianet and its owners, which include RS MP Rajeev Chandrasekhar, be brave enough and stop accepting advertisements from Amul?

Interestingly, Amul is also on the hit-list of ‘animal rights’ FCRA-NGO Peta India, which had recently asked it to switch to selling ‘vegan milk’.

As expected, this stunt at the expense of the Patel population did not go down well with Patels, the world over. They translated Aby’s Malayalam video into their local language and it spread on social media like wildfire.

Patels are predominantly a land-owning farming community who have now established themselves in business as well. They are primarily found in Gujarat, although sizeable numbers exist in Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, as well as metropolitan cities like Mumbai and Delhi.

That the mischief was aimed at Narendra Modi and Gujarat is pretty obvious. Praful Khoda Patel and Amul were secondary casualties. That it came from an evangelist turned atheist/communist did not surprise many Kerala Hindus, but surely angered many Patels. Incidentally, the ‘drinking dog milk’ part did not go down well with Muslims, who consider the animal as ‘dirty’.

Praful Khoda Patel has been entrusted with administering and reforming the Union Territory islands of Lakshadweep by the central government. His bold initiatives have not gone down well with Islamist elements who have found support, as expected,  from both the Communists and the Congress in the Kerala Assembly.

It has been barely one month since an Asianet ‘reporter’ named PR Praveena openly admitted that the killing of BJP workers and supporters in West Bengal post-poll violence is not their channel’s priority since they don’t care about ‘Sanghis being killed’, and added ‘Bengal is in Pakistan’.

It was allegedly this foul-mouthed tirade that led to thousands of customers using the portability option to switch their cellular service providers away from those providing ads to Asianet. Back then, as usual, Asianet begged forgiveness and escaped any sort of punishment from the central government.

Let’s also not forget how Asianet and MediaOne had their broadcast suspended for biased and inflammatory coverage of anti-Hindu Delhi riots last year, and how that ban was lifted within hours after intervention of I&B Minister Javadekar. Similar lip service is expected pretty soon.
