A request to a neighbour to go inside his house as he was under home quarantine turned deadly for a middle-aged Hindu lady, Kala Jatav (47), and her brother, Vishnu Jatav (45). Two others – Kala’s son and brother-in-law – were critically wounded in the attack that took place in Prem Nagar area of Bhind town on Friday night.

Superintendent of police, Bhind, Nagendra Singh told Hindustan Times that main accused Kapure Khan’s son-in-law Rajnu Khan had come from a Corona hotspot in Delhi two weeks back. Hence, the entire family was asked by the district administration to undergo a home quarantine. On Friday, one of Khan’s family members visited another family in the locality. However, Kala Jatav objected to his moving around in the locality by jumping home quarantine and without being tested negative for coronavirus as this could put others life at risk. The verbal spat soon got out of hand.

As per Hindi news reports, the Muslim family started pelting stones which were amassed on their terrace, and Kala Jatav was struck on her head and died on the spot. Hindustan Times reports that Vishnu Jatav was stabbed by Kapure Khan’s relative Chhutki Khan and succumbed to his injuries in a hospital in Gwalior on Saturday morning.

Critically injured Akash Jatav and Ramesh Jatav are undergoing treatment in Gwalior.

An FIR was registered against nine people under various sections of the IPC and six people, including Kapure Khan and three women, have been arrested. There is tension in the entire area after the incident.

However, the way this violent attack has been covered by Shekhar Gupta’s The Print is quite interesting. First, a look at the headline – “Clash over ‘home quarantine’ in MP’s Bhind leaves 2 Jatavs dead, 9 from Muslim family booked”

So the victims are mentioned as Jatavs and those booked as Muslims. The message is clear – The Print does not think Jatavs (a Scheduled Caste) are Hindus, or maybe they don’t even consider ‘Hindu’ as a real identity. What if two Yadavs or Guptas had been killed – would they have been called Hindus by The Print?

Next, The Print story is littered with inaccuracies compared to all other sources we scanned – Hindustan Times, NDTV Hindi, Bhopal Samachar. Quoting an anonymous police officer, The Print says that Kapure Khan, son-in-law of Munna Khan, had come ‘a month ago’ from Delhi. All other reports categorically state that it was Kapure Khan’s son-in-law (HT provides his name as Rajnu Khan) who came from Delhi. HT mentions the son-in-law had come two weeks back, which makes sense as inter-state travel via Shramik Train only started from 1 May.

The Print is dismayed that no cross FIR was registered in the matter. Again, quoting a ‘local police’ source, The Print‘s Ananya Bhardwaj writes that police booked only the Muslim family as they were “more aggressive”. The same anonymous source adds that as the Muslim family numbered more than the Hindu side, only Hindu casualties were reported but the Muslim family too sustained some ‘non-grievous’ injuries.

Bottomline: two Hindus are dead in a sudden violent attack – one hit with a stone, the other stabbed – over a minor verbal tiff with their Muslim neighbours, and left-liberal media can’t digest why police has not lodged a counter FIR against the Hindus too. This is how much Hindu lives, even Dalit ones, matter for them.
