Vested interests spread fake news about girl breaking piggy bank and dying without oxygen in UP

UP (Uttar Pradesh) police have come down heavily on vested interests who are using the Chinese Virus pandemic to create panic through social media. UP police put out a tweet saying vested interests were spreading fake news info-demic to defame the administration.

Their one-minute video message says:

Many of us have lost our loved ones to the deadly Covid pandemic from which the entire world is suffering. At such a time we must be supporting each other. Unfortunately, some vested interests have been spreading fake news through social media to create an environment of fear and discredit the administration.

There’s a consolidated attempt from various fake Twitter accounts spreading misinformation regarding a girl admitted in a private hospital in Ghaziabad, UP and these accounts have tweeted the same message word-to-word. In reality, the girl is alive and has returned home.

The 18-year-old girl’s father also confirmed her well being. The UP police have also urged people to neither post nor share any unverified information on social media Furthermore, the video message also states that action has been initiated against those spreading rumors from Ghaziabad and Noida while adding that those spreading rumors will be health strictly as per law.

As per available information, it has come to light that multiple Twitter handles had put out a message stating that the girl from Ghaziabad who had broken her piggybank and donated INR 5000 to PM CARES fund, died as she couldn’t get oxygen. However, this information turned out to be false.

Therefore, UP police took to Twitter to set matters right. OpIndia says “the UP police have alleged that ‘tool kit tweets’ were being used by the miscreants to spread rumours and create panic amidst the COVID-19 outbreak. In a subsequent tweet, the police said similar ‘tool kit tweets’ were found about Noida police where several people posted spread fake news about tragedies to malign the administration.”

OpIndia report also points out how UP police have been taking rumormongers to task by filing FIR against people spreading false news through social media. The report states:

Last Saturday, the Uttar Pradesh Police filed an FIR against social media users for attempting to tarnish the image of the UP government and Noida Police by using fake accounts to spread rumours and create panic amidst the raging COVID-19 outbreak.

The decision to file an FIR came after Twitter was flooded with identical tweets of bereavement in which the users insinuated that the death of their loved ones because of the pandemic is to be blamed on the administration. The tweets mentioned UP CM Yogi Adityanath, PM Modi, and several other prominent personalities.

The police also shared screenshots of the copy-pasted messages being circulated on social media websites. The screenshots comprised of identical tweets posted by several users expressing their bereavement at the loss of their loved ones because of the pandemic.

In times like these fake news can turn out to be potentially disastrous and hence, it is important that the menace is nipped in the bud. It must be mentioned that there is a concerted effort to discredit BJP in general and PM Modi and CM Yogi Adityanath in particular.
