Churches, Christian groups fueling vaccine hesitancy in North East

Vaccine hesitancy is the biggest problem the government and health workers are faced with today. It has now come to light that in North Eastern Bharat certain Christian groups and churches are fuelling vaccine hesitancy thereby endangering the lives of the people. These groups led by ‘prayer warriors’ are discouraging people from taking the vaccine and are instead advocating the use of ‘prayers’ and herbs to cure the Chinese virus.

The Eastern Zion Healing Ministry had ‘prophesized‘ in January this year that mass vaccination to deal with the Chinese Virus pandemic ‘was not the will of god’ while advocating that believers shouldn’t get vaccinated. The prophecy read “Through the vaccination, the mark of the ‘beast’ will come which will follow biochip/microchip containing the number of the beast” while adding that those taking the vaccine will be denied entry into Christ’s millennium kingdom.

The same group is said to have issued similar prophecies earlier as well. In 2018, the group had stated that the Aadhaar card and Rubella vaccines were against the will of God.

Similarly, Christian groups are creating vaccine hesitancy among the populace in Meghalaya by linking vaccines to ‘evil forces’ as they did with Aadhar earlier which was said to be similar to ‘being marked by the devil’. Manipuris are also being made to believe that they would be saved only by the Bible and not vaccines. Vaccine hesitancy is particularly higher in Christian-dominated hilly areas of the North East.

OpIndia says “Earlier in May, 2021, soon after the 5-day Church revival camp was held in April, the test positivity in Nagaland rose to 13%. In the event, which turned up to be a superspreader event, 45 out of 69 people tested positive for COVID, with a 65% positivity”.
