More than 2500 vaccine doses wasted in Congress-ruled Rajasthan

On the one hand, Congress-ruled states have been blaming the central government for vaccine shortage but on the other, vaccine wastage has come to light from these states. The Rajasthan government has been issuing statements such as centers have to be closed due to a shortage of vaccines as the Centre is not supplying even one-fourth of the amount demanded by the state.

The Center, however, is releasing data every day, telling which state was given how many vaccine vials and how many doses have been wasted by the states. A vial consists of 10 doses. It has now come to light that 500 vials containing more than 2,500 doses were found in dustbins at 35 vaccination centers in 8 districts of Rajasthan. Such a massive wastage of the life-saving vaccine reiterates the need for vaccine audit.

According to a report by Dainik Bhaskar:

In the course of Dainik Bhaskar’s investigation, it came to light that, more than 500 vials that were nearly about 20% to 75% full were found to be discarded in the dustbins. According to central government data, more than 11.50 lakh covid doses were wasted in Rajasthan from January 16 to May 17. The state and central government have also been giving out their own figures on the vaccine wastage issue.

The Rajasthan government is stating that the vaccine wastage in the state is just 2%, while the Center has reported a 7% vaccine wastage in April, and on May 26 Central data indicated that 3% of the vaccine has been wasted in the state. Bhaskar’s team reached the covid vaccination centers and discovered that the percentage of vaccine wastage is actually up to 25%. Principal Secretary of the state’s Health Department Akhil Arora has promised to investigate the matter.

It must be mentioned that at the vaccination camp set up at the Senior Secondary School by the Hindoli Health Centre, none of the doses have been wasted.
