Swati Maliwal – Bibhav Kumar assault row and woke lobby’s selective outrage on women’s issues

The woke lobby displays selective outrage when it comes to women’s issues in Bharat. It creates noise only on those issues that suit its political motivations and skips those that do not fit into its political narrative.

What else explains the eerie silence of the self-proclaimed “intellectuals” and “feminists” of the country on the Swati Maliwal issue? The brigade that so vociferously championed TMC leader Mahua Moitra’s “rights” even as she was found guilty by a Parliamentary panel in a “cash for query”, leading to her expulsion from her Lok Sabha membership, adopts curious silence on the issue of Swati Maliwal’s alleged assault by Arvind Kejriwal’s PA Bibhav Kumar.

It is the same pattern of political convenience being adopted. When Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut, BJP’s election candidate for the Mandi Lok Sabha constituency is character-assassinated through social media posts by prominent members of opposition parties, the woke “intellectuals” and “feminists” again go into the silent mode.

This selective outrage on women’s issues goes on to show that for the woke lobby, issues impacting women are important only as long as these work to strengthen its political case.

AAP Rajya Sabha MP Swati Maliwal, who was allegedly assaulted by Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s aide, has now filed a police complaint.

In her complaint. Maliwal, the former Chief of the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) alleged that Kejriwal’s aide Bibhav Kumar slapped and kicked her, beat her with a stick, and punched her in the stomach.

In her police complaint. Swati Maliwal has alleged that Bibhav Kumar barged into the room where she was waiting to meet Arvind Kejriwal and started abusing her verbally before slapping her multiple times, and continued assaulting her even after she raised an alarm and asked him to let her go, as per media reports.

Based on Swati Maliwal’s statement, Delhi police filed an FIR against Bibhav Kumar. The FIR, as described in media reports, mentions such gruesome details of the assault that it’s hard to write these in print.

Maliwal also reportedly underwent a medical checkup at AIIMS on Friday. As per the medico-legal report, she has suffered internal injuries on her face, says a report published by India Today.

As per the latest news updates at the time of writing this article, Swati Maliwal reached Delhi’s Tis Hazari court Friday afternoon to record her statement on the assault by Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal’s PA Bibhav Kumar.

In the meantime, Swati Maliwal has also written a social media post regarding the alleged assault.

“What happened to me was very bad and unfortunate. I have given my statement to the police regarding the incident. I hope the appropriate action will be taken. I thank those who prayed for me. For those who tried to character assassinate me and said that I am doing all this on the behest of another political party, God keep them happy as well. The country is going through important elections. Swati Maliwal is not important, the issues facing the country are what matter. I specially appeal to the BJP people not to politicize this issue”, said Maliwal on X.

Swati Maliwal had called the police control room a couple of days ago alleging that she was assaulted when she went to visit Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal at his residence. However, following the call Maliwal had gone underground and didn’t immediately register a complaint. It was only a couple of days later that she lodged a formal complaint with the police.

What is shocking in the whole matter is that Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal is not just silent on the whole issue but also, that the accused Bibhav Kumar can be openly seen accompanying Kejriwal.

Bibhav Kumar was reportedly spotted at the Lucknow airport on Thursday along with Arvind Kejriwal who was in the city to address a joint press conference with Samajwadi party Chief and INDIA bloc leader Akhilesh Yadav.

In a Republic Bharat news bulletin covering this, one could see news reporters asking Arvind Kejriwal in the press conference why he is silent on Swati Maliwal’s alleged assault issue, to which Kejriwal could be seen responding with unrelated talk about the BJP and PM Modi and Amit Shah rather than addressing the questions of the journalists.

Samajwadi party Chief Akhilesh Yadav can be seen dismissing the issue by casually saying, “is se zyaada zaroori aur cheezein bhee hain (there are other important things to be discussed”. In the Republic Bharat coverage, one can also see reporters crowding Bibhav Kumar’s car outside, questioning him on the Swati Maliwal case while Kumar refuses to engage with the reporters.

This shows the deplorable attitude towards women of the likes of Akhilesh Yadav who seem to think that a Rajya Sabha MP and former Chief of the Delhi Commission of Women undergoing brutal physical assault within the premises of the Delhi Chief Minister’s residence isn’t that important an issue. Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal is out on bail and yet, he seems unperturbed by the serious allegations made against his close aide by Swati Maliwal who can be openly seeing accompanying Kejriwal to press conferences.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has also reacted to the Swati Maliwal incident saying that Delhi CM Arvind Kejirwal’s silence on the alleged assault of AAP Rajya Sabha MP Swati Maliwal was “shocking”.

“It is shocking that Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal has not spoken a word about his party MP Swati Maliwal who misbehaved with and beaten up in the CM’s residence. The CM has not acted, responded, or spoken about it”, she further said.

The woke “intellectuals” and “feminists” of Bharat seem concerned about all sorts of issues from the Israel-Gaza conflict, and Russia-Ukraine war to the apparent importance of using gender neutral pronouns. But when it comes to domestic issues impacting women, their outrage is reserved for selective events that suit their political narrative. Speaking up against the physical assault of a woman Rajya Sabha MP of a party like AAP doesn’t suit the woke agenda because AAP itself is a part based on wokeism.

Arvind Kejriwal’s Aam Aadmi Party rose to almost overnight prominence because of the 2011 India Against Corruption Movement led by Anna Hazare. It was a legitimate civil society movement, popularly known as Anna Aandolan but ironically enough, Arvind Kejriwal hijacked the movement and made it a vehicle to launch his electoral fortune.

2-3 years down the line, Anna Hazare was nowhere to be seen and Kejriwal became the face of the movement, and that’s how the first AAP government came to power in Delhi, enjoying unprecedented support of the youth and the middle class over its promises to clean up corruption and anti-establishment stance.

To the Bharatiya middle class which was fed up with dynasty politics and felt that the archetypal politician was disconnected from their lived experiences, AAP with its middle-class base (initially, a lot of people from the middle-class with no political base had joined AAP) seemed like a breath of fresh air.

11 years down the line, the AAP façade has come crumbling down and in hindsight, their so-called social movement seems wokeism served to the Bharatiya public. That is why the middle class slowly got disenchanted with AAP and people quit the political party in hordes, just as they had joined it.

Back in 2013, AAP with all its talk about radically transforming the political ecosystem, its distinctive appeal amongst the educated youth and the middle class, its promises to clean up corruption, etc. was the poster boy of wokeism. Just as the woke lobby’s talk about fixing the society sounds very radical and impressive but in reality, is a sham to protect the very status quo it pretends to challenge, it seems the same with the likes of AAP.

A party which rode to victory on its so-called “progressive” politics supposedly aimed at drawing the youth and middle class into politics, would come to a point where its own woman Rajya Sabha MP would have to file a police complaint regarding an alleged brutal physical assault within the premises of the Delhi CM house, is beyond shocking. But that’s wokeism for you.
