Olympic men’s hockey: Bharat beats Germany 5-4 to win bronze, 41 year wait over

Bharat defeated Germany 5-4 in a high-intensity goal fest to win the bronze medal in men’s hockey, their first medal in Olympics after a gap of 41 years. They had last won Gold at the 1980 Moscow Olympics.

Bharat fought back brilliantly from a two-goal deficit to score an impressive 5-4 win that reminded its fans of the glory days when Bharat was a force to reckon with in World hockey.

Simranjeet Singh scored two goals while Harmanpreet Singh, Rupinderpal Singh, and Hardik Singh scored a goal apiece for Bharat while for Germany Oruz, Furk, Nicolas Whellen, and Windfeder were on target.

With this win, Bharat has broken the bogey that had haunted them for a long time, and converted the upward trajectory that the team has displayed in the last few years to deliver when it matters.

As senior player Rupinderpal Singh said in the post-match interview, “We had our sights set on Gold, but winning a bronze medal will be wonderful for the game back home.” One hopes that this medal-winning performance will spur the team on to greater heights, and lead to a hockey boom in the country.

Modern hockey is one of the most physically demanding sports today, and nothing could be better for the youth of this country, both boys and girls, than to sweat it out in sports rather than waste their time on social media and in idolizing vapid Bollywood celebs.

Now, if the the women’s hockey team were also to win their bronze-medal match with ‘Great’ Britain, that would provide another amazing boost to the sport in Bharat!
