A girl, Asha (21), was attacked with a machete by her ex-boyfriend Ismail (25) in broad daylight while walking to the jewellery shop where she works in Hubballi (Hubli), Dharwad district, Karnataka. The incident occurred around 10 AM on Monday morning in Deshpande Nagar.

The victim, who was assaulted on her back several times with the machete, was rushed to hospital and is said to be out of danger although she did suffer head injuries. The accused Ismail, an auto-driver in Rampura in Dharwad district, has been arrested.
“We were told that the two people used to be together before but after the woman left Ismail, he decided to attack her. We have registered a case against him for the assault,” SK Holeyannavar, Hubballi Suburban police station inspector who is investigating the attack told media outlets.
“We have arrested the accused Ismail and seized the weapon used in the crime. An investigation is going on. The girl has been shifted to a private hospital and is undergoing treatment. The doctor told us that she is out of danger. Once she regains consciousness, we will take her statement,” Hubballi Police Commissioner Labu Ram told media.

An earlier version of the headline suggested that the girl Asha who was attacked was a Hindu. But it has come to light that the girl’s full name is Asha D Agasara, and that is she a Muslim. The headline has been updated accordingly.
