Do Thrissur police have an Abu Dhabi spy in their net?

Kerala police arrested a Keralite from Abu Dhabi who set up a complex parallel wireless system inside his house in Thrissur for alleged anti-national activities. Namberiveettil Sampath (42), a native of Chazhur, Anthikkad, was arrested. He was detained after he tapped secret messages from the Kerala police wireless communication network.

Suspiciously, the accused worked with the Abu Dhabi Ministry of Defence for several years. Janmabhumi reported that while in Abu Dhabi, Sampath, an electronic engineer, worked as a technician in the IT sector. Police raided Sampath’s house following a tip-off received by the Thrissur Rural District Superintendent of Police, Aishwarya Dongre IPS.

Anthikkad police surrounded the house and arrested him. Equipment seized includes antennas, internet devices, handsets used for surveillance, and laptops that store messages. Sampath told the police that he bought these devices online. The police indicate that it has been used for months.

Did he set up a parallel wireless system at home and leak Kerala police intelligence messages to United Arab Emirates (UAE) spies? UAE is a federation of seven Sheikhdoms home to oil-rich Abu Dhabi and the skyscrapers/beaches of Dubai.

Sampath, who ‘returned’ from Abu Dhabi, has been back in Bharat for the past five years. The police were shocked to see the sophisticated wireless systems that he had assembled at home. The telecommunication department, cyber cell, and other anti-terrorist departments of the police are investigating in detail.

There are indications that these electronics have the facilities to monitor even air traffic systems. From a national perspective, it is necessary to know whether Sampath has helped anyone in activities that endanger national security. Who provided financial support to Sampat to install these systems and why?

United Arab Emirates & Bharat

One should not underestimate the UAE’s geographic position or relatively small population from a geopolitical standpoint. The nation is in a volatile region where at least one significant conflict breaks out every few years. Politicians in the UAE have long been concerned about the regional superpowers Iran and Saudi Arabia. UAE leaders (a bunch of authoritarians) have followed a twofold strategy to protect the state.

First, by hosting several significant American military facilities, the UAE enjoys American security. Second, these authoritarian regimes have sought wider international backing to develop soft power, including espionage. They maintain 21 consulates, one other representation, and 92 embassies abroad. Bharat is well aware of what they did in their Thiruvananthapuram consulate.

It is absurd to attack the ‘Islamist goal’ of the Emirate for collaborating with organizations like the Taliban. The UAE is a middleman between violent Islamic forces and the American administration. Despite being dubbed the “New Israel-UAE Peace Deal,” the UAE opened peace negotiations with terrorist organizations like Hamas with the open backing of the US administration. When evaluating UAE’s intentions, such contradictions must be taken into account.

The UAE has adopted a far more aggressive stance under Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the crown prince of Abu Dhabi and the nation’s de facto leader since 2014. In May 2022, he became the ruler of Abu Dhabi and was elected to the presidency of the UAE the next day. Nowhere is his confrontational attitude more openly evident than in Yemen, where it partnered with a coalition led by Saudi Arabia in 2015 to aid the nation’s exiled government in fighting the Houthis.

However, Sheik Mohammed considered Iran its greatest threat, and the Patriot missiles seen on the outskirts of Dubai have been directed that way for years. The Houthis have recently attacked from the southwest.

Al-Dhafra Air Base, where there is a sizable American presence, has already been identified as a viable target by the Houthis. Twice, the 2,000 US troops stationed at Al-Dhafra Air Base in Abu Dhabi fired their Patriot missiles to assist in stopping the Houthi airstrikes. Iran actively supports the Yemeni Houthis, and several missiles have hit targets in Saudi Arabia.

Bharat’s relations with Yemen go back centuries. Our relations have been deep-seated and discreetly steady for over five decades arising from anti-colonial sentiments. Yemen is also geopolitically crucial for Bharat.

After the announcement of a ceasefire in the eight-year-long conflict in April 2022, Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said that Bharat has friendly ties with Yemen and hopes for peace, security, and prosperity for the people of Yemen as well as for the region. Our stand irked the UAE autocrats and their American paymasters.

How does a little nation like the UAE exercise influence? They allegedly employ spies or unofficial contacts. It is also claimed that the royal families of the UAE indirectly support the Popular Front of India (PFI) and other Islamist groups in their efforts to promote Wahabi doctrine throughout Bharat. These ‘charity’ receivers in Bharat are organizations that use madrasa education to spread radical beliefs like the burqa-wearing and Wahabi philosophy.

To develop pan-Islamism, these nations also support Hinduphobia through nefarious outlets. Incidentally, the UAE is a region where every vice known to man (including ones that Muslims consider haram) is abundantly available. Alcohol, prostitutes, and pork products are easily accessible all over the UAE but remain hidden behind a purdah.

However, the Islamic country found the courage to teach Bharat about the rights of religious minorities in the wake of the recent Nupur Sharma controversy.

All across the Muslim world, Americans have a penchant for employing Hindus from Bharat, especially in their military bases. One cannot blame the deep mistrust the Americans harbor against locals.

These are their bilateral issues, and Bharat does not care less, but we must be cautious when employees like Sampath indulge in spying against us. Though Sampath’s religious inclination remains unknown, his name certainly sounds Hindu. Is the UAE employing Hindus for espionage? That is precisely why central intelligence agencies must take over the case.
