“On the first Sunday of April, Kanha Tiger Reserve lost Sunaina. The tigress, known by her camera trap number T-122, was around 10 years old — old enough to have raised several litters, popular enough that tourists from across India and abroad had made her a fixture on their safari wishlists.
Patrolling staff found her carcass near Sijhora Road in the Kanhari beat. Deep injuries on her body. Pugmarks of multiple adult tigers at the spot. Field Director Ravindra Mani Tripathi reached the scene with a veterinary team. Prima facie, a territorial fight.
Just less than 24 hours earlier, in the Matkuli range of Satpura Tiger Reserve, forest guards heard loud roars deep in the forest on a Saturday evening. They rushed to the spot. A four-month-old male cub was dead, with claw and teeth injuries, most likely killed by another tiger. Forest officials found pugmarks of both a male and a female near the site.
