Vivah Panchami: Janakpurdham is Ready to Welcome Baraat from Ayodhya

Yesterday I came to meet Ram Roshan Das Baba, Chhote Mahanth of Janaki Temple at Janakpurdham, Nepal. Upon my query “what different, people would sense during the Vivah Panchami of this year?” he responded, “As Yogi Adityanath is coming from Ayodhya with baraat, we are decorating Janakpurdham as bride and saffronize the city. Most importantly, we have managed a series of seven-days programmes, like- nagar parikrama, phoolwari lila,, dhanush yagya, tilakotsaw, matikor and swayambar”. These are the special events which had occurred in Treta Yuga as well on the day when Sri Rama and Sita got married.

Janakpurdham and Vivah Panchami

Indeed, this celebration is a part of an age-old tradition in which saints and pilgrims travel each year from Ayodhya, Bharat, birth place of Sri Rama. Vivah Panchami is a historical celebration which has been helping both Nepal and Bharat to maintain people-to-people relation deeply.

Vivah Panchami is a festival celebrating the wedding of Rama and Sita. It is observed on the fifth day of the Shukla Paksha or waxing phase of moon in the Agrahayana month [November-December] as per Mithila Calendar. The day is observed as Vivah Utsav of Sita and Rama in temples and sacred places associated with Sri Rama in Mithila region of Bharat and Nepal.

Most importantly, this festival is a landmark entity which fosters tourism between two countries. On this specific day thousands of Hindu pilgrims come to Nepal to commemorate the wedding of Bhagwan Rama and Devi Sita. Similarly, Hindu pilgrims of Nepal throughout the country join the festival at Janakpurdham to witness the historical wedding.

Nepal could have taken this auspicious day as an opportunity to exhibit her culture and traditional values. When Bharatiya Prime Minister Narendra Damodar Das Modi had visited Janakpurdham on 24 May 2018, number of Hindu pilgrims from Bharat got mushroomed which the provincial government of Nepal is not being able to manage in a meaningful way. Janakpurdham is still not tourists’ friendly city.

After the visit of Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath on 12 December, it’s an obvious that number of Bhartiya tourists will increase once again. Nepal should talk to CM Yogi to seek assistance that how the Bharat-Nepal tourism can be managed and be promoted to an optimum level.

Refrain of any controversy

As we know politics guides everything. Few political leaders and activists of Nepal are trying to use the visit of CM Yogi for their political benefits. Visit of Yogi Adityanath is for religious purpose and he is coming to Nepal as a representative of Bharatiya Government. But here in Nepal, those who are vocal for restoration of monarchy seem vocal as if CM Yogi would utter statements in support of monarchy.

On January 8, 2018 former king of Nepal had received warm welcome from CM Yogi, after which Nepal’s politics got waved for few months. Ordinary people of Nepal were compelled to think that why Gyanendra Shah met CM Yogi than anyone else? However, it was CM Yogi who had shown his culture of hospitality.

So, the Vivah Panchami must not be the forum for someone to play any political cards. Relation between Nepal and Bharat is more emboldened and historical, all because of religious and cultural perspectives.

Nepalese leaders of different parties must learn from CM Yogi that how he is managing the sentiment of all religions in Uttar Pradesh. Seeking any statement from him regarding politics would hamper Bharat-Nepal relation.

  1. […] “Vivah Panchami” (celebrated this year on 12th December) is a day that marks the glorious wedding of Rama and Sita in Ramayana. Sita Kalyanam is an event that has fascinated Hindus for many centuries, across geographies. In fact there have been films dedicated to depicting Sita Swayamvar, notably in 1934, when there was a Tamil film titled “Sita Kalyanam”. The film was remade in Telugu and was a major hit. […]
