Bihar: Entire village converts to Christianity due to superstition

A shocking case of an entire village converting to Christianity within a year owing to superstitious beliefs. The incident has come to light from the Gaya district’s Belwadih village where persons belonging to a particular community accepted Christianity following promises of ‘miracle cure’ through prayers by evangelical missionaries.

A colony of Scheduled Caste Hindus began converting to Christianity following prayer meetings arranged by the evangelicals and within a year the entire colony had turned Christians. According to reports, all 25 families of Hindus in the colony accepted Christianity.

The entire sequence of events began with one Kevla Devi whose son fell ill last year. As per her claims, she had taken him to several doctors but it was of no avail. It was then that someone suggested the Christian prayer meetings.

After learning of her plight, several evangelicals landed in the colony and conducted “prayer meetings”. Kevla Devi further claims that her son was “cured” owing to the “holy water” and “prayers” by the evangelicals. Therefore, she and her family converted to Christianity.

Following this several other families of the colony also started attending Christian prayer meetings. Evangelicals conducted prayers every Sunday at a person’s house in the nearby Wajidpur village. Slowly, the entire colony embraced Christianity.

Converted females said that they have stopped applying sindoor (vermillion) on the days they attend the prayer meetings while doing so on other days. Furthermore, they also said that they don’t have faith on Hindu deities anymore and hence have stopped poojas (Hindu prayers).

This highlights how easy it is for evangelicals too brainwash Hindus through claims of “magical cures”. The lack of education and medical facilities in these areas makes the job of Christian evangelicals easier. While courts often have opinions on and keep targetting Hindu Dharma by saying prayers such as Hanuman Chalisa are superstitious beliefs, they look the other way when it comes to Christianity like the present case.

District administration must equally share the blame for propagation of such dubious claims as it is the lack of medical facilities as well as education that provides fertile grounds for Chrisitan evangelical missionaries to brainwash Hindus particularly those belonging to socio-economically backward classes.
