TN: Seventh Day Adventists distribute Bible in the guise of Covid-19 relief

Evangelists who distributed Bibles in the guise of distributing Covid-19 relief materials have been booked by Tamil Nadu police. 7 including the functionaries of Seventh Day Adventist Trust were booked by the police for violating Covid-19 restrictions by drawing crowds and distributing Bibles without permission.

Seventh Day Adventists run a higher secondary school and an international academy in Hosur, Tamil Nadu. On September 6, some people were distributing masks, food packs, etc. While it was thought of Covid-19 relief work, evangelists who had organised it distributed Bibles and other Christian literature along with the relief materials.

Upon coming to know of this VHP and other Hindu organisations lodged a complaint with the police for unlawfully drawing a crowd and distributing religious texts in the guise of relief materials. Based on the complaint, Seventh Day Adventist Trust’s director Pandit Vishwa, school manager Jeba Rajan, Antony Das and seven others were booked by the police.

Seventh Day Adventists run many educational and medical institutions across Tamil Nadu. In 2015 the Ministry of Home Affairs had cancelled the license of 17 Seventh Day Adventist organisations for violation of FCRA rules. Out of the 17 organisations 15 were schools spread across Tamil Nadu. The Seventh Day Adventist Church based in the US was probed by the MHA after concerns were raised about their association with Indian Christian FCRA organisations in 2020.
