‘Take Rs. 500 and abuse Hindu gods’: Christian conversion racket busted in Azamgarh, UP

Ram Chandra, a Varanasi resident was arrested from Azamgarh, UP after locals protested when he used derogatory words against Hindu Gods. He was trying to lure poor Hindu SC women with money to convert to Christianity. Christian literature was found from the accused who was operating in the area for the last three months.

The matter came to the notice of the police when natives of Saraimandraj and neighboring slums of Kartalpur lodged a police complaint. Inspector-in-charge Brahmadin Pandey said, “Based on the complaint of Jittu Sonkar, a resident of Sarai Mandraj village, the police have arrested the accused. He had been pressurizing the poor family members in Azamgarh to convert for the past several months.”

A Christian convert, Ram Chandra fraudulently used a Hindu name to lure women and asked them to abuse Hindu deities. He used to tell villagers that if they convert to Christianity, Jesus will remove poverty. He infiltrated the villages claiming to end ‘superstition’, an old trick that evangelists still use, before they impose the worst superstition man has ever devised: that praying and believing in their ‘One True God’ and his son Jesus alone can ‘save’ humans and send them to heaven.

The accused would then motivate the villagers to convert and distribute religious literature on Christianity. Sonkar said that when he started addressing Hindu deities in derogatory terms, the local people opposed him. Then he offered Rs. 500 for each person present there.

Late on Tuesday night, Azamgarh SP Sudhir Kumar said that an FIR has been registered against the accused under the illegal conversion prohibition law. He added that a search is on for others involved in the conversion racket. They are also investigating how many people the mafia has converted so far.
