Fanatic Christians have allegedly uprooted a Shivling in Assam and desecrated the sacred space it was installed in. Centuries old banyan tree under which the Shivling was placed was also cut down in an attempt to threaten Hindus into giving up worship. Hindu organisations have lodged a complaint with the police against this aggression and requested for protection.
Opindia reported that Hindu Raksha Dal and Hindu Chhatra Sangh submitted a memorandum to the Cachar district Deputy Commissioner seeking to take action against the miscreants who uprooted the Shivling and cut down the sacred tree. The incident is said to have taken place in Mahadevtilla in the Katigorah Tehsil of Cachar district where Khasi tribals who converted to Christianity are in majority.
If reports are to be believed 85% of the Khasi tribals in the region have converted to Christianity. Saying that the incident was intentional, Hindus say that it is an attempt to frighten them into giving up following Hindu dharma. As per their account, the Shivling and Trishul which have been worshipped for more than a century under the same sacred banyan tree were uprooted and the religious things placed there were thrown away.
In their memorandum Hindu organisations have requested for protection from Christian fanatics and restore the Shivling and Trishul in the same place with iron fencing to prevent a repetition of the incident. Local Hindus allege that even though they filed complaints with the Forest Officials and the police, no action was forthcoming and none of the miscreants have been arrested.
Barak Bulletin, a local portal reported a local Hindu as saying, “People from the Khasia Punji (Khasi Settlement) intentionally cut the tree to threaten us against any sort of Hindu practices. They have been doing such activities for a long time. This is the extreme step that they have taken”. They have accused that Khasi people who practice Christianity do not let them even go near the chopped tree and guard it with weapons. Hindus are reportedly chased away if they go there to worship and threaten them with dire consequences.
Aninda Dev of Hindu Chatra Sangh told Opindia that instead of punishing the culprits, police ask Hindus to stay away from Christians. Subhasish Choudhury of Hindu Raksha Dal said that Christians and Hindus had a pact to not interfere in each other’s religious affairs which the Christians broke by uprooting the Shivling and cutting down the tree. Hindus accuse the police of not acting even after a week since they filed complaint. However police claim that they are looking into the matter and that if the tree wasn’t cut down inadvertently they’ll take action against the culprits.

We hindus will have to be fully aware and alert if we are to save Hinduism for our future generations in India. This is a long term project by both Christianity and Islam, so we will have to be prepared, never ever give up this big battle in India.
