Sena leader Pandurang Sakpal said that his party Shiv Sena will organize Azaan (Islamic prayer call) competition on the lines of Bhagavad Gita recitation competitions and said that the Azaan was as important as the Maha aarti. He added that the intention behind organizing this competition was to ensure that children endeared and encouraged to recite the Azaan. It must be mentioned here that Sakpal is the Dakshin Mumbai Vibhag Pramukh.
Sakpal said that he resides near the bada kabristan (big cemetery) and hears the Islamic prayer call every day. He said that the azaan is melodious and sweet to hear and that he always found it amazing. He always looked forward to hearing the azaan and would eagerly wait for it to be played.

He said that it was his love for the azaan that made him come up with the idea of organizing azaan competition for the children of the Muslim community. Rewards will be given to the children who give azaan by seeing their pronunciation, their voice, and recitation. Shiv Sena will bear the cost of this competition, said Pandurang Sakpal.
The children of the Muslim community recite the azaan wonderfully. The purpose of this competition is to give scope to their artistic talents. I don’t think such a competition has ever taken place in the country. This is the first time we are experimenting with this idea and we hope it will get a good response, Sakpal said.
Sakpal added that the azaan lasts only for five minutes. So, if anyone is bothered by these five minutes he should be considered spoilsport and ignored like we ignore a rock of salt. The tradition of azaan is very old and so it is wrong to oppose it. Azaan is as important as Maha Aarti and said that it is a symbol of love and peace.
