Roorkee: Church accused of luring people to convert in exchange for money and jobs

A church in Roorkee has been luring people to convert their religion using cash inducements and promises of getting them employed. A woman has alleged that the church offered her two lakhs rupees and promised her a job and house if she embraced Christianity.

Woman accuses Roorkee Church

As per the woman’s complaint, the church had conducted a program where she along with some others were offered the aforementioned inducements if they agreed to become Christians. She has further said that the church began pressurizing them as they turned down the offer.

It has further come to light that when they refused to convert, they were abused and assaulted by the men and women present in the church. The attackers even robbed them of their possessions including the gold chain. They were supposedly rescued by people who reached the spot on hearing their calls for help.

The complainant has been identified as Adarsh Nagar resident Sonam who has alleged in her police complaint that she and her husband Rahul along with Mohit, Sarita Tyagi, and Kavita Valmiki had been invited for a social function in the church.

When they reached the church, the men and women present there allegedly attempted to lure them by offering money and jobs stating that they were “lucky” to have reached Jesus. Additionally, they were also promised houses, free medical treatment, and admission to church-run convent schools for their children.

In their bid to pressurize Sonam and others to convert, the church members are even said to have threatened them saying their children would die if they left the prayers. When Sonam and those accompanying her opposed, the church members began assaulting and abusing them.

There are also allegations of their clothes having been torn by the church attendees. SP Premendra Singh Doval has assured of conducting a thorough investigation on the basis of the complaint registered by Sonam.

Church manager Sadhana Lance, on the other hand, has alleged a planned attack on the church. She has also alleged that it was the outsiders who attacked the church members first. SP Doval has stated that all aspects of the case would be taken into consideration and thoroughly investigated to get to the truth.
