Hindu man alleges wife pressured family to convert to Christianity; police launch inquiry: Shivamogga, KA

A case of alleged forced Christian religious conversion has surfaced from Bhadravathi in Karnataka’s Shivamogga district, where a Hindu man has accused his wife of converting to Christianity and pressuring him and their two minor daughters to follow the same faith. The complaint has been registered at the Paper Town Police Station, and officials have confirmed that an investigation is currently underway.

The complainant, B. Vinay, a resident of Bommanakatte in Bhadravathi, stated that he married Priyatha R in 2011 at the Halebidu Banashankari Kalyana Mantapa in Belur Taluk of Hassan District, in accordance with Lingayat Kumbara traditions. The couple has two daughters and, according to the complaint, led a peaceful family life for several years after their marriage.

As per the reports from The Hans India, Vinay alleged that issues began around 2015 when Priyatha started working as a teacher at Podar International School in Shivamogga. During this period, he claims she came into contact with a colleague who influenced her towards Christianity. Over time, he alleges, she gradually distanced herself from Hindu customs and eventually converted to Christianity.

According to the complaint, Priyatha’s behavior reportedly changed after her conversion. Vinay claimed she began visiting church regularly, reading the Bible at home, and practicing Christian prayers. He further alleged that despite his objections, she repeatedly pressured him and their daughters to abandon Hindu practices and adopt Christianity. He also claimed that their elder daughter was compelled to participate in Christian prayers and religious practices.

The dispute over religious differences is said to have severely affected the couple’s relationship. Vinay stated that Priyatha first left the family home in 2019 but returned in 2020 after persuasion from family members for the sake of the children. However, he alleged that the pressure to convert intensified again in 2024, leading to frequent conflicts within the household.

In his complaint, Vinay further claimed that Priyatha left the home again in 2025, allegedly stating that she would return only if he and the children agreed to convert. He has also alleged that she later filed a domestic violence case against him, which he claims is false and retaliatory. These allegations are now part of the ongoing inquiry.

Police officials have confirmed that a case has been registered based on the complaint and that the matter is being examined from all legal angles. Authorities stated that further action will be taken after a thorough investigation and verification of the claims made by both sides.

The case also raises serious questions about the role of educational spaces and the responsibility institutions carry in maintaining religious neutrality. Schools are meant to be safe, inclusive environments where students and staff from all faiths can coexist without fear of pressure or influence to change their beliefs. If allegations of Christianity’s religious influence originating within a school environment are proven true, it would raise wider concerns about institutional boundaries and the protection of students from any form of ideological or religious coercion. Educational institutions, teachers, and staff must remain strictly neutral and ensure that personal beliefs are never promoted or imposed within professional spaces. The situation underscores the urgent need for clear safeguards, accountability, and vigilance to preserve trust in schools as spaces dedicated solely to education.

According to Hindu Dharma, there is no concept of forcefully converting others into the faith, whereas other religions like Islamism and Christianity are often perceived as encouraging and promoting conversion. In Christianity, pastors and preachers often attempt to convert people through various means, including material assistance and financial benefits, especially targeting economically vulnerable communities. What makes this situation more concerning is that even educated individuals are reportedly falling into such influences. This is a serious issue that needs wider awareness and discussion by the Hindu organizations and the Hindu community.
