So far in the history of West Bengal’s Presidency University, Saraswati Puja has never been performed on the campus premises. On Thursday, ordinary students submitted an application to the Dean of Students seeking permission to perform Saraswati Puja on the premises of Presidency University.
In the letter, they said that they want to perform Saraswati Puja on the university premises this year. For that, they want permission to use the institution’s premises from January 25 to 27. But the authorities did not give that permission. It was reported that the university believes in DeRozio’s approach to ‘maintaining secularism’ on the campus by not allowing worship.
But after the authorities objected to the puja on the university campus, the general students erupted in protest. They announced that Saraswati Puja will be performed in the university campus. At the same time, the students also said, “No one can stop the puja.” Meanwhile, the SFI unit, CPM’s student wing, of Presidency University is trying hard to stop the Saraswati Puja. However, the common students warned against it and said that the puja would be organised at the gate of the university as a protest.
Allegations against the Presidency University authorities for imposing leftist ideology on common students are very old. Continuity of this trend has been seen in the current decision of the university authorities regarding Saraswati Puja. As in the past, the Presidency University authorities have decided against the puja, which is one of the most important religious observances in Bengal.
In protest against this decision, ordinary students have announced they will organize Saraswati Puja at the gate of the university. Apart from this, ordinary students have warned of strict agitation if there is an attempt to stop the puja.
