Well-known Sanskrit scholar and teacher of Vedas, Madugula Manikya Somayajulu passed away at his home on Monday evening due to illness. 81-year-old Somayajulu was a resident of Sangareddy district’s Sadasivapet village. Somayajulu took sanyasa on early Monday morning assuming the name Sri Brahmananda Tirtha Mahaswamy.
Somayajulu set up several veda pathashalas in Telangana and taught Vedas and Sanskrit for six decades. He also spent three years in Kashi (Varanasi) with his wife Lalitha teaching Sanskrit to youngsters. Somayajulu organized a boodhan (land donation) program on the bank of the Ganga river. He pooled in resources to purchase 400 yards of land for the purpose.
Somayajulu also has the distinction of gracing the three yagnyas conducted by Telangana CM K Chandrasekhar Rao (KCR). Ayuta Chandi Yagnya in 2015, Maharudra Sahita Sahasra Chandi Yagnya, and Rajasankalpa Yagnya at KCR’s Yerravalli farm.
Somayajulu was born in Patlloor village. His father Madugula Purushotham Somayajulu was also a scholar. He obtained education both at his village school as well as at the Brahmana Gurukula School at Papayapalli village in the Guntur district.
