Notice banning Muslims during annual festivities in Malliyottu Palottu temple: Kannur, Kerala

A notice board that appeared in front of Malliyottu Palottu temple in Kannur district banning entry to Muslims during the yearly festivities has infuriated the so-called seculars of Kerala. The celebrations begin with the festival of Vishu in mid-April and last for one week.

The opponents of the notice are also the same people who know very well how Hindu temples are being desecrated (exhibit A, exhibit B, exhibit C) by those opposed to ‘idol worship’, and what can happen if a non-Muslim if found loitering around a mosque; but they nonchalantly side-step these realities.

Interestingly Sree Malliyottu Palottu Kavu (temple dedicated to Palottu Daivam, an incarnation of Sri Vishnu) lies in the heart of the communist heartland of Payyannur in the Kannur district of Kerala. The temple committee members are all active CPM party members who openly admit that the board is placed there every year for the past many years.

The communist stand is that it is an age-old custom of Hindu party supporters and that the party has no intention of hurting their sentiments adding that the board will remain. This also makes it amply clear that the Muslims in that locality do not vote for the CPM. If there was even a minuscule chance of garnering a few votes, the CPM would have gone for minority appeasement.

This also negates any Sangh Parivar connection as is being alleged by the opponents of the notice. Allegations of religious hatred being promoted at public places too do not stand true since this is a temple and is a public place for the Hindus of that locality and not for all and sundry passersby.

The origin of such a notice is even more intriguing. It is alleged that a group of Muslims (who were permitted back then) raped a Dalit girl during the festivities, and this notice banning Muslim entry came into existence ever since and still remains. Now there are scouts who check whether Muslims enter. Fights have broken out whenever such attempts at entry are made by the Muslims. Why do they want entry into temples, places of shirk and grave sin as per their religious teaching, is also questionable.

There is also news trickling in that secular Hindus have removed the board but the authenticity is not confirmed. The way the communists are hell-bent on destroying our traditions and the safety of our temples, any such move would not come as a surprise. However, how the devotees react needs to be seen.
