Tamil Hindus in Malaysia have filed their objection to EV.Ramasamy aka Periyar finding mention in the school textbooks. As per social media posts, 6th standard Tamil textbooks in Malaysia had EV.Ramasamy as one of the leaders who worked for the ‘betterment’ of the Tamil society. Malaysia Hindu Sangam has taken up this issue after it was brought to its notice by the parents.

Parents are against the idea of their children learning about someone who degraded Hindu Dharma, and registered their protest against the textbooks having a chapter on EV.Ramasamy. The organisation issued a statement following the issue that some Dravidian ideologues in the textbook designing committee are upto this mischief, trying to push anti-Hindu agenda through the Tamil language.

After Malaysia Hindu Sangam wrote a letter to the department of education their representatives were invited for a meeting with the deputy minister of the education department, Dr. Mah Hang Soon to explain the issue, and it was agreed upon that the ministry will involve the stakeholders while designing the new textbook. Malaysia Hindu Sangam representatives have also suggested that instead of only including information about Bharatiya Tamil leaders, local Tamil leaders’ history should be added. 

The organisation has alleged that Hindu Dharma is slowly being erased from school education and provided an example for that as well. In Tamil Nadu Hindus celebrate 1st of Chithirai Tamil month (14th of April this year) as the New Year. But late CM and DMK president Karunanidhi announced in his tenure that 1st of Thai Tamil month, (the 14th of January this year) which is also celebrated as Pongal, would be the New Year. However the succeeding AIADMK government with Jayalalithaa as the CM announced that the Hindu tradition of celebrating 1st of Chithirai as Tamil new year will continue.

It is to be noted that even though the then DMK government changed the New Year, Tamil Hindus kept celebrating it on 1st of Chithirai. Similarly Tamil Hindus everywhere celebrate Tamil New Year on the same day. It is pertinent to note here that with assembly elections nearing in TN, DMK has announced that it will change the new year again if it comes to power. This move by the Dravidianists is seen as an attempt to gradually hijack traditional Tamil Hindu festivals and convert them into secular festivals. Malaysian Tamil Hindu parents have objected to this trick played upon their children and reached out to Malaysia Hindu Sangam.

It has taken up this issue with the education minister as well and was promised action in this regard. The organisation, in its statement, has asked the Dravidian Movement sympathisers in the education department to stop pushing such anti-Hindu and atheist content in the schools. The incident has proven that regardless of the place and position they are in, the Dravidian ideologues push their anti-Hindu bigotry. 

While the present DMK president MK. Stalin has started posing with Vel (spear of Bhagawan Skanda) for votes, it will be DMK’s mother organisation Dravidar Kazhagam that calls the shots in core issues such as education and temple management. Likewise, Periyarists seem to have occupied important positions in Malaysia’s education department to push their ideology among the next generation.
