Madras HC upholds SC category teacher appointment of ex-Christian converted to Hindu Dharma by VHP

The Madras High Court has accepted the ‘shuddhi’ ceremony or conversion to Hindu Dharma conducted by Vishwa Hindu Parishad on an ex-Christian woman and upheld her selection and appointment as a junior graduate teacher under the Scheduled Caste (SC) category, reports Organiser.

Justice R Suresh Kumar pointed out the relevance of the government order which allows such reconversion and subsequent benefits. He clarified that the government order decides to extend benefits available to SC candidates who had converted from Christianity to Hindu Dharma or those who reconverted to Hindu Dharma, provided the community accepted such conversion/re-conversion.

He said, “The Vishwa Hindu Parishad, one of the reputed and internationally acclaimed organisations for Hindu religion, which is constantly and steadfastly propagating the greatness and richness of Hinduism and Hindu rites and customs in this country, had performed the necessary pooja called “Shuddhi Satangu” on November 1, 1998. The name of the petitioner, which was originally Daisy Flora, has been changed into A Megalai. On completion of the pooja by pandits of Vishwa Hindu Parishad, it has been declared that she had converted from Christianity to Hinduism.”

By birth Megalai belongs to a Christian (Paraiyan) community and subsequently got married to a man named Vanavan who belonged to the Hindu (Paraiyan) community. As a result, she was also given the SC community certificate. When she participated in the selection process for the junior graduate teacher post, she was not selected under SC category on the grounds that she was not entitled to the benefit as she was a ‘reconvert’.

Following the above, an interim order was passed in March 2005 in the Madras High Court and she was appointed to the post and later re-designated BT Assistant (Science).

This ruling assumes significance in light of the recent revelation of a long-term fraud perpetrated on SCs of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana by crypto-Christians who continue to avail SC benefits even after conversion to Christianity. Other courts and governments should immediately take cognisance and prosecute any Christian found availing SC benefits, including those organisations and government servants who abetted such fraud. Only those who genuinely (re)convert to Hindu Dharma should be allowed to continue with their SC status.
