My Kula (Kuruma/Kuruva) Daivam is “Beerappa”, an incarnation of “Veerabhadra”. Our official priests are called “Beerollu”. They narrate the story of Beerappa through a folk oral tradition called – “Oggu Katha” @ReclaimTemples @punarutthana @LostTemple7 @PankajSaxena84 @Anviksiki
To give you a glimpse of great philosophy that exist in “Oggu Katha”, here is the summary of a part of the story. Beerappa was born to SooraMahadevi.
It was professed that he was a threat to his maama “Nara Bhupathi”, for he was forcibly abandoned under a tree. When Ujjaini Queen MahanKaali was in the region with her 1.25 Lakh Sheep herd, she found Beerappa and brought him up like a brother since she had no children.
On the day when she informs Beerappa that she wants to make him the King of Ujjaini, he spontaneously refuses saying “least interested in all this, since he is a Kaarana Janmi (incarnated for a purpose)” and expresses his desire to become a shepherd taking care of Akka MahanKaali’s 1.25 Lakh sheep. She then teaches him rules to take care of the herd –
1. Never to kick any sheep
2. Aged hefty sheep in the flock will be called Peddamma/Peddayya
3. Younger hefty sheep will be called Chinnamma/Chinnayya
4. Newborn female will become Chelli (sister)
5. Newborn male will become thammi (brother)
6. All born before him becoming shepherd will be called Akka/Anna.
