A peaceful celebration of Kara Hunnime, a centuries-old Hindu agrarian festival dedicated to cattle and agricultural prosperity, descended into violence in Naregal village of Hangal taluk, Haveri District, on 29 June 2026. As per the Organiser reports, the festival, observed across North Karnataka, traditionally involves devotees decorating bulls and calves, conducting village processions, offering prayers, and bursting firecrackers as part of long-standing local customs. According to police and eyewitness accounts, tensions flared when the procession reached an area near a mosque, and firecrackers were burst during the celebrations. A verbal altercation soon escalated into a violent confrontation by the radical Islamist goons, disrupting the religious procession and creating panic among Hindu participants and devotees.
Eight injured as clash escalates
What began as a dispute rapidly turned into a large-scale clash involving members of Islamic communities against Hindus. Armed radical Islamist assailants allegedly attacked participants in the procession, with some reportedly using sharp weapons, leaving at least eight people injured, several of whom required hospital treatment. Videos circulating on social media showed scenes of chaos as Hindu devotees and villagers fled for safety while police rushed to the spot to restore order. The incident has raised serious concerns about the safety of Hindu religious processions and the authorities’ ability to prevent communal tensions from escalating during traditional festivals.
