K V Sampath Kumar the editor of the only Sanskrit newspaper in the world passes away in Mysuru

K V Sampath Kumar (64), editor of the world’s only Sanskrit newspaper ‘Sudharma’ passed away in Mysuru on Wednesday following a cardiac arrest. Though he faced numerous challenges, Sampath ensured that Sudharma (founded by his father K N Varadaraja Iyengar in 1970) survived. He worked as a reporter, editor, and publisher. He was laid to rest with full state honours.

Bharat had honoured Sampath and his wife K S Jayalakshmi with the prestigious Padma Shri award in 2020. This was recognition for their efforts to popularize Bharat’s classical language. He was awarded several awards including the Siddarudha award, the Shivaratri Deshikendra Media award, and the Abdul Kalam award.

“K V Sampath Kumar Ji was an inspiring personality, who worked tirelessly towards preserving and popularising Sanskrit, especially among youngsters. His passion and determination were inspiring. Saddened by his demise. Condolences to his family and admirers. Om Shanti” tweeted PM Narendra Modi.

Karnataka CM B.S. Yediyurappa expressed condolence and added that the state had lost a unique achiever in the field of journalism. Solace poured in from different corners including top leaders of the country, politicians, litterateurs, and a host of relatives and friends. BJP national president J P Nadda was among those who mourned Sampath Kumar’s untimely departure.

Sudharma’s print edition has over 4,000 subscribers from various Sanskrit universities and institutions across the country. Along with his wife, he had also launched an e-paper that has more readers. On the occasion of the newspaper’s Golden Jubilee last year, Sudharma had brought out a souvenir edition.
