Hindus under attack: a weekly roundup of hate crimes, persecution, and discrimination against Hindus

Attacks on Hindus and Hindu Dharma, both in Bharat and overseas, are frequent and unrelenting. In many regions of the world, this persecution is like a genocide slowly unfolding before our eyes. For decades, the world has ignored the actual depth and breadth of these attacks, driven by disturbing anti-Hindu bigotry. From murders, forced conversions, land grabs, assault on festivals, desecration of temples and murtis, hate speech, and sexual violence to institutionalized & legal discrimination, Hindus are facing an increasing assault on their very existence along with an unprecedented Hindu hatred.

In this weekly summary for the period from 25 September to 01 October 2022, we hope to provide a snapshot of such crimes and hopefully awaken more people around the world to this human rights crisis:

1) Kozhikode Railway Protection Force (RPF) officers arrested four Muslim workers from Uttar Pradesh who gang-raped a minor girl, aged 16 from Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh. Iqrar Alam (18), Ajaz (25), Shakeel Shah (42), and Irshad (23), natives of Varanasi, were detained and handed over to Kerala police.

2) Hindu minor sisters were pressured to convert to Islam, wear Muslim clothes, and study at Madrasa. They have been living in Lachhi Kheda for almost four years, and local youth named Zeeshan, Guddu, Ateeq, Raja, and 4-6 other boys from their community have been harassing these girls all along.

3) Eight Muslim youth from Assam, all using the alias ‘Rahul’ ran the Love Jihad gang and trafficked over 100 girls to Haryana.

4) Class 10 school student 15-year-old Aditya Tiwari was brutally murdered after being fatally injured when three boys stabbed him in front of the school. Three boys, two of them minors, belonging to the Muslim community have been identified as the main culprits in the case. The third accused identified as Taif alias Sonu Khan, who is the main conspirator, is absconding.

5) A fruit merchant with suspected links with the Islamic State (IS) terror group was arrested in Karnataka’s Koppal district, police said on Monday. The arrested person was identified as Shabbir Mandalagiri, a resident of the Binnigida region in Gangavathy town, where he worked.

6) Two Christian nuns have been arrested in the Sambhal district of UP for committing sacrilege against Hindu Dharma by spitting on and burning images of Hindu deities.

7) Taxi driver Iqbal Mohammad Sheikh (36) brutally murdered his wife Rupali Chandanshive (20) by slitting her throat for not following Islamic traditions and demanding a divorce. The incident occurred late on Monday night in the Tilak Nagar/Chembur area of Mumbai.

8) On Tuesday, September 27, pictures of a desecrated Maa Durga murti in Hyderabad surfaced on social media. Damages to the murti and the lion were visible in images from the site. Soon, it was revealed that two Burqa-clad women had carried out the vandalization in the Navaratri Pandal in the Khairatabad locality of Hyderabad.

9) In Amdavad’s (Ahmedabad) Sindhu Bhavan area, organizers found that 4 Islamist youth had sneaked into a Garba event with nefarious intent.

10) 20-year-old Deepak Tyagi was brutally murdered in a Taliban-style beheading for his alleged relationship with a Muslim girl. The incident took place in Meerut District’s Parikshitgarh.

11) 2G scam fame DMK leader A Raja’s recent anti-Hindu hate speech has once again exposed the hypocrisy of Dravidiansits in practising ‘equality’ and the media’s hypocrisy in calling them out.

Bangladesh

Attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh are relentless and designed to gradually cleanse the religious minority from the country. According to a study by Prof. Abul Barakat of Dhaka University, no Hindus will be left in Bangladesh by 2050 due to systemic and institutionalized persecution. Temple desecration, land grabbing, mob attacks after false blasphemy charges, rape/forced conversion of women, and hate speech are some tools used to intimidate and drive Hindus out.

1) Bangladeshi Hindu cricketer Liton Das became the target of religious hate from Bangladeshi Islamists after he posted greetings for Mahalaya, which is both the final day of Pitru Paksha/Shradh and marks the arrival of Maa Durga on earth from Kailash Parvat.

2) Sujan Paul is the latest member of the minority community to become a victim of the Islamic nation’s blasphemy law (Tweet archived here).

3) Two homes and six shops of Hindus were attacked by UP chairman Mohammad Ariful Islam Arif and Jahangir Alam in Natore (Tweet archived here). Her dead body was recovered from a field.

4) Minor girl Popi Sarkar was raped & murdered in Sultanpur village of Nabiganj Upazila under Habiganj district. Her dead body was recovered from a field (Tweet archived here).

Most hate crimes are driven by anti-Hindu bigotry encoded in certain religious teachings and political ideologies. While the anti-Hindu hate in Islamic countries is evident, there is another subtler form of anti-Hindu sentiment within institutions and the public sphere of ostensibly secular states (like India) that provides an enabling environment for Hinduphobia and hate crimes. This subtle, everyday discrimination can be missed unless one studies prevailing laws and patterns. The gradual ban on firecrackers during Diwali is a good example – it might seem pollution-related on the surface, but the double standards at play become apparent when one looks at the larger picture of restrictions on Hindu festivals and the lack of sound reasoning behind the ban.

We request all readers to share other anti-Hindu hate crimes that we might have missed in this period in the comments below or by dropping an email to [email protected]. We also solicit support in maintaining the Hindu human rights tracker database.
