Hindus under attack: weekly roundup of hate-crimes, persecution and discrimination against Hindus

Attacks on Hindus and Hindu Dharma, both in Bharat and overseas, are frequent and unrelenting. In many regions of the world, this persecution is like a genocide slowly unfolding before our eyes. For decades, the true depth and breadth of these attacks, driven by disturbing anti-Hindu bigotry, have been ignored by the world. From murders, forced conversions, land grabs, assault on festivals, desecration of temples and murtis, hate speech, sexual violence to institutionalized & legal discrimination, Hindus are facing an increasing assault on their very existence along with an unprecedented Hindu hatred.

In this weekly summary for the period from 05 September to 11 September 2021, we hope to provide a snapshot of such crimes and hopefully awaken more people around the world to this human rights crisis:

Bharat

1) Shocking details of Christians conducting “Japa Yatra” to counter Hindus celebrating Ganesh Chaturthi have emerged from Tamil Nadu. A letter from a pastor and the chairman of educational institutions in Coimbatore asking Christians to conduct prayer meetings on Ganesh Chaturthi to “stop idol worship” has gone viral on social media.

2) Shoaib, Aaqib, Arif, Iqbal, and Saif stopped a Hindu youth named Kuldeep Yogi and assaulted him when he refused their extortion demands. The incident happened near Uda village, two km away from Harda district headquarters in Madhya Pradesh.

3) A brutal case of grooming jihad commonly referred to as ‘Love Jihad’, has been reported from Agar, Madhya Pradesh. An FIR has been registered at the Susner Police Station of Agar in Malwa district of MP. Around three years ago, a Hindu girl was lured into a relationship by a Muslim man named Irfan who introduced himself to the girl as Rohan. He convinced the Hindu girl to elope with him and married her as per Hindu rituals. But earlier this year, he forced the Hindu woman to marry him again as per Islamic rituals and perform a Nikkah ceremony with him.

4) A group of Muslim women belonging to the women’s wing of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind was seen distributing pamphlets ‘celebrating’ Hijab Day on Saturday in Maharashtra’s Nagpur close to the CM house. The women were also encouraging Hindu minor girls in the age group of 15-25 to wear the Hijab.

5) A grooming jihad case has been reported from the Gautam Buddha Nagar (Noida) district of UP. A man named Sajid groomed a Hindu woman, raped her, stole Rs. 5 Lakh rupees from her, and forced her to convert to Islam. The accused is absconding. In a complaint filed at the Bisrakh police station, the victim said that Sajid didn’t reveal his real identity and introduced himself using a Hindu name.

6) Suresh Kathera, a pentecostal bishop from Andhra, has been declared as a Hindu SC by the Guntur district collector. Pastor Suresh was earlier in the limelight when his video where he says “Pastors are killed and churches are burnt” in Bharat went viral on social media. An appeal has been made against the district collector’s decision as it will result in Christian converts getting undue benefits from the reservation and government schemes.

7) The murti in a Maa Kali temple in Gunnaur town of Sambhal district, West UP was vandalized last night. Angry locals lodged a complaint in the police station and demanded prompt action against those responsible.

8) Rakesh Tikait was seen raising the Islamic “Allah-u-Akbar” slogan in the so-called farmers’ mahapanchayat supposedly to promote communal harmony among Hindus and Muslims.

9) A shocking video has emerged on social media which allegedly shows Andhra Pradesh government officials moving Sri Ganesha murtis in a garbage truck. Many Hindus believe this is yet another deliberate slight to their religion under the Jagan regime in Andhra.

10) The festival of Ganesha Chaturthi is the latest flashpoint between the state government and opposition parties, particularly the BJP, in Andhra Pradesh. On Monday, state endowments minister Vellampalli Srinivas warned the BJP against rousing communal passions, while BJP state president Somu Veerraju accused the Jagan Mohan Reddy-led state government of discrimination against Hindus.

11) In a harrowing case from Pune, a 14-year-old girl was kidnapped from the railway station, held captive for 2 days, and gang-raped by 13 men. Prime accused auto-rickshaw driver Mashak Abdulmajid Kanyal found the girl, who had gone to meet a friend, alone at the station around 10.30 PM on August 31. Offering to take her home, he instead took her to a lodge and raped her, before calling his friends who also proceeded to rape the girl.

12) Details have emerged that the Telangana government has given away the land where a temple was situated to a Muslim construction company. Hindus who protested against the move and demanded that the temple be restored were arrested by the police.

13) The Andhra Pradesh High Court has upheld the state government’s ban on the public celebration of the Hindu Vinayaka Chaturthi festival. However, the High Court also directed the state government to permit the installation of Ganesh pandals on private premises.

14) A Catholic Bishop in Kerala has spoken out against Islamic extremism. Addressing Christian devotees, the Syro-Malabar Catholic Bishop Joseph Kallarangatt said that the aim of Jihadis (Islamists who wage holy war to spread Islam) is to promote their religion and end non-Muslims. For this, they use ‘love jihad’ and ‘narcotic jihad’.

15) Hindus living in Muslim-dominated areas in Malpura wards 12 and 21 of Tonk, Rajasthan placed posters outside their homes that they are being forced to leave due to a climate of fear & insecurity. In this town, 70 km west of Tonk, many Hindu families are now moving out after selling their houses and shops.

16) Even though the Gujarat state government has implemented a law against forcible or deceitful conversions such as those achieved by hiding one’s true identity to entrap girls, new information has emerged about how even this new law could be subverted.

17) Yet another case of grooming leading to a brutal gang rape has come to light, this time from Kerala. The modus operandi has become sickeningly obvious by now – befriend a girl on social media (usually using a false identity), lure her into a relationship, then either gang-rape or force her into sex slavery by blackmailing using intimate photos/videos.

18) Activist Anshul Saxena who raised questions regarding Pastor Bajinder Singh’s ‘miracle cure’ claims is being harassed by the Christian conversion mafia. Social media (SM) users came out in support of Saxena who became the target of Bajinder Singh and his conversion mafia because the former had flagged the issue of a minor being used by Singh for conversion propaganda.

19) A Hindu temple was demolished by the BJP-majority Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) even as devotees and locals protested against the move. The demolition of the Ramapeer Temple in Surat’s Kadodara area was undertaken by the Surat municipal team on Wednesday amidst protests. The protestors, who were detained by the police, were let off later.

20) A Hindu girl has gone to police alleging that her husband is forcing her to convert to Christianity after marriage and his sister is also trying to brainwash her into conversion.

21) According to reports, unknown miscreants targetted 3 temples in the area and desecrated Murtis within. The local Hindus raised strong agitation against the sacrilege and blocked a road in protest.

22) A Hindu woman health worker of Jamdih village of Gumla district of Jharkhand has lodged an FIR at Kurkura police station alleging that some villagers are torturing her family members to accept Christianity. The complainant, who belongs to a Scheduled Caste, said that assailants even sexually abused her daughter who is now in a state of shock.

Bangladesh

1) Islamists in Bangladesh are having a free hand at destroying one Hindu temple after another and tormenting the Hindu minorities even as the world is focused on the Taliban tension on Afghanistan, advocating for the Afghan refugees, who at one point wanted the rule of Sharia in their land and are now running away from its dreadful clutches.

2) A Hindu temple was attacked by Islamists in Bayerbhangha, Batiyaghata P.S Khulna district on 10 September even as Hindus the world over celebrated the Ganesh Chaturthi.

World

1) Hindus globally are highly concerned regarding reports of the fifth vandalizing of Swindon Hindu Temple & Cultural Centre in South West England since May; this temple meets the spiritual needs of about 20,000 Hindus of the area.

2) An Indian-origin Uber driver, Kuldip Singh, has been killed allegedly by a 15-year-old as New York City faces rising levels of violence, according to media reports.

3) A 23-year-old Bharatiya youth from Punjab has been murdered in Canada. Prabhjot Singh Katri was found murdered early on Sunday morning near his residence in the city of Truro in Nova Scotia. The victim came to Canada from Bharat in 2017 for higher studies. After finishing his studies, he was on a work visa and was driving a cab to earn his livelihood.

4) Over the last few weeks, Hindus in Aotearoa have been shocked to find out about a publication by Massey University promoting Hinduphobia and Hindumisia. The paper titled ‘Cultural Hindutva and Islamophobia’ was authored by Prof. Mohan J. Dutta, Dean’s Chair Professor in Communication, School of Communication, Journalism and Marketing, Massey University. The paper was a part of the CARE White Paper Series published by the School of Communication, Journalism, and Marketing.

Most hate crimes are driven by anti-Hindu bigotry encoded in certain religious teachings and political ideologies. While the anti-Hindu hate in Islamic countries is obvious, there is another subtler form of anti-Hindu sentiment within institutions and the public sphere of ostensibly secular states (like India) that provides an enabling environment for Hinduphobia and hate crimes. This subtle, everyday discrimination can be missed unless one studies prevailing laws and patterns. The gradual ban on firecrackers during Diwali is a good example – it might seem pollution-related on the surface, but the double standards at play become clear when one looks at the larger picture of restrictions on Hindu festivals, and the lack of sound reasoning behind the ban.

We request all readers to share other anti-Hindu hate crimes that we might have missed in this period in the comments below or by dropping an email to [email protected]. We also solicit support in the maintenance of the Hindu human rights tracker database started by us.
