Hindus under attack: a weekly roundup of hate crimes, persecution, and discrimination against Hindus

Attacks on Hindus and Hindu Dharma, both in Bharat and overseas, are frequent and unrelenting. In many regions of the world, this persecution is like a genocide slowly unfolding before our eyes. For decades, the world has ignored the actual depth and breadth of these attacks, driven by disturbing anti-Hindu bigotry. From murders, forced conversions, land grabs, assault on festivals, desecration of temples and murtis, hate speech, and sexual violence to institutionalised & legal discrimination, Hindus are facing an increasing assault on their very existence along with an unprecedented Hindu hatred.

In this weekly summary for the period from 06 July to 12 July 2025, we hope to provide a snapshot of such crimes and hopefully awaken more people around the world to this human rights crisis:

Bharat

1) A tense situation unfolded in Kashmir’s Magam, when a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) was reportedly assaulted by a mob of Islamists participating in a Muharram procession.

2) In a deliberate and provocative act, unidentified Islamists desecrated the sacred murthis of Bhagwan Ganesha and Naga Devata in the Bangarappa Layout area of Shivamogga’s Raggigudda.

3) Islamists attacked a Rath Yatra procession in the Howrah district of West Bengal. As the Rath Yatra procession was crossing the market, suddenly a group of Muslim youths attacked the procession.

4) Ajay Yadav was brutally murdered and several others injured during a violent outbreak that occurred in the wake of a Muharram procession in the village of Kanakti in Mehsi block, East Champaran district, Bihar.

5) Like the previous years, this year also West Bengal witnessed violence during the Muharram procession. Islamists indulged in violence against and attacked Hindus in several districts of West Bengal.

6) In several cities and districts across the country, the solemn occasion of Muharram into an alarming display of provocation and blatant disrespect towards Mandirs. From Bilaspur to Hazaribagh, disturbing incidents have surfaced, leaving society shocked and outraged.

7) In a shocking incident that exposes the brutal face of Islamist intolerance in Bihar’s Darbhanga district, Gaurav Kumar Singh was subjected to inhuman torture simply for being in a relationship with a Muslim girl. The girl’s family, enraged by their interfaith relationship, inflicted a Taliban-style punishment on the young man, cutting his hair with scissors and smearing black soot across his face, all while filming the barbarity and circulating the video on social media.

8) Assistant Executive Officer (AEO) A. Rajasekhar Babu  was suspended by Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) after it was found that Rajasekhar Babu regularly attended Sunday church prayers in his hometown, Puttur, which was a violation of the TTD’s code of conduct for its employees.

9) A Muslim mob brutally thrashed e-rickshaw driver Bedan Ghosh for not paying chanda (donation) ahead of Muharram. The incident occurred in Sainthia town in Birbhum district.

10) A massive religious conversion syndicate targeting Hindu girls through deceit and coercion has been busted in Uttar Pradesh, with its mastermind Jalaluddin, alias Changur Baba, now under arrest.

11) A female Hindu employee at Lulu Mall in Uttar Pradesh’s Lucknow charged her manager, Farhaz also known as Faraz, with rape and blackmail. He also forced her to convert to Islam, leading to his arrest. She disclosed that he gave her a cold beverage that was spiked with drugs and then sexually violated her.

12) In a disturbing incident that sparked communal tension during the ongoing Kanwar Yatra, Mohd Shehzad was arrested in Uttar Pradesh’s Muzaffarnagar district for allegedly spitting on a ‘kanwar’ being carried by a woman pilgrim.

13) Tension gripped Goalpara town after unidentified miscreants vandalised multiple Murtis at the Durga Temple complex, damaging those in the Shiva Temple, Maa Manasa Temple, and Maa Durga Temple.

14) Another disturbing incident exposed, this time from Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh. A Muslim man, Shaan Khan, posed as a Hindu named Shaan Sharma to trap a young Hindu woman in a live-in relationship under the false promise of marriage. For nearly two years, he raped and exploited her while hiding his true identity.

Pakistan

Abduction, rape, forced conversion, and marriage of minor Hindu girls are common occurrences in the Islamic Republic of Pakistan. At least 1000 minority girls suffer such sex slavery every year in Sindh province alone. Apart from this, Pakistani Hindus face systemic and institutionalized discrimination and neglect, such as frequent attacks on Hindu temples, demonization of education curriculum, police and judicial antipathy, denial of fundamental rights, and even untouchability. This latest instance of the brutal rape and murder of a Bheel woman in Pakistan is yet another proof of the pitiable condition of Hindu minorities in Pakistan.

1) On June 20, 2025, a court in Shahdadpur, Sindh, issued a controversial ruling regarding the custody of two Hindu minors, Dashina Bai (15) and Harjeet Kumar, also known as Hani (13). The court mandated that their families deposit personal surety bonds equivalent to US$35,000 each, an enormous sum for them, as a pre-condition for the children’s return.

Most hate crimes are driven by anti-Hindu bigotry encoded in certain religious teachings and political ideologies. While the anti-Hindu hate in Islamic countries is evident, there is another subtler form of anti-Hindu sentiment within institutions and the public sphere of ostensibly secular states (like India) that provides an enabling environment for Hinduphobia and hate crimes. This subtle, everyday discrimination can be missed unless one studies prevailing laws and patterns. The gradual ban on firecrackers during Diwali is a good example – it might seem pollution-related on the surface. Still, the double standards at play become apparent when one looks at the larger picture of restrictions on Hindu festivals and the lack of sound reasoning behind the ban.

We request all readers to share other anti-Hindu hate crimes that we might have missed in this period in the comments below or by emailing [email protected]. We also solicit support in maintaining the Hindu human rights tracker database.
