Hindus under attack: a weekly roundup of hate crimes, persecution, and discrimination against Hindus

Attacks on Hindus and Hindu Dharma, both in Bharat and overseas, are frequent and unrelenting. In many regions of the world, this persecution is like a genocide slowly unfolding before our eyes. For decades, the world has ignored the actual depth and breadth of these attacks, driven by disturbing anti-Hindu bigotry. From murders, forced conversions, land grabs, assault on festivals, desecration of temples and murtis, hate speech, and sexual violence to institutionalised & legal discrimination, Hindus are facing an increasing assault on their very existence along with an unprecedented Hindu hatred.

In this weekly summary for the period from 15 June to 21 June 2025, we hope to provide a snapshot of such crimes and hopefully awaken more people around the world to this human rights crisis:

Bharat

1) In a deeply disturbing incident, an 80-year-old Hindu woman named Lakshmidevamma was brutally raped and murdered in broad daylight in Srinivasapura, Kolar district. The accused has been identified as Baba Jaan (37), a resident of Gaffar Khan Mohalla in the same area.

2) Yet another case of love jihad against Hindu girls by trapping them in love affairs and marrying them has come to light from Madhya Pradesh, this time from Indore. The name of Congress councilor Anwar Qadri alias Anwar Dakait has also come to light in this case. It is being reported that Anwar Qadri had given lakhs of rupees to his two henchmen, Sahil Sheikh and Altaf Khan, to trap Hindu girls, and then later convert them to Islam after marrying them.

3) A century old mandir was reportedly demolished using JCB machines in Khadki of Maharashtra’s Akola. Although an ANN (Akola News Network) report attributed the heinous act to unidentified miscreants, The Treeni identified (tweet archived here) the accused as Jibrail Ibrahim Diwan (60), his son, and two of their accomplices. The accused not only demolished the mandir but also discarded the murtis.

4) Communal tension broke out in Lakhipur town in the Goalpara district of Assam after extremists dumped the severed head of a cow near a Mandir. Hazarat Ali and four others were arrested for dumping severed head of cow near Kali Mandir. This was the third incident of temple desecration in one week.

5) Recent developments in Azamgarh’s Chhota Pura area have brought to light a deeply troubling episode for the local Hindu community. Around 40 Hindu families have put up “house for sale” posters, citing repeated harassment, violence, and a lack of effective administrative response. This incident has reignited concerns about the safety and rights of Hindus in Muslim-majority localities.

6) A Muslim youth, Anwar Khan, allegedly changed his name around eight years ago to trap a Hindu minor girl in a fake love affair and eloped with her. He then kept her in captivity and, as claimed, facilitated her sexual assault by several men. On 1 June, while Anwar Khan was taking her somewhere on a bike in Pilibhit, the girl happened to see her father on the way. She raised an alarm, and as a crowd began to gather, the accused fled the scene, leaving her behind.

7) A case of forced religious conversion by enticing Hindus with jobs and money has come to light from Aliganj town in Etah, Uttar Pradesh. Police raided the house of a man named Sundar Singh and arrested 4 people in the case.

8) Devotees across Tamil Nadu are reeling from yet another incident of Mandir murti desecration, the latest occurring at the Black Mariamman Temple in the Chinnampalayam area of Coimbatore. This act of vandalism has not only deeply disturbed the local community but also intensified growing concerns over the security of religious sites and what some are calling a disturbing pattern of such incidents across the state.

9) A disturbing attempt of religious conversion has come to light from the Sundar Nagar area of the Daresi police station range in Ludhiana on 15 June, where Christian missionaries reportedly tried to lure local residents to convert to Christianity by offering money, miraculous healing, and false promises.

10) In Himachal Pradesh’s Sirmaur district, a Muslim youth took away a Hindu girl. When the girl’s family reached the Muslim youth’s house with people from a Sanatani organization, stone pelting took place. Some police personnel were also injured in this case. Now the police have filed an FIR against the activists. The girl has been recovered.

11) A troubling case of deception, sexual assault, blackmail, and alleged religious coercion has surfaced in Indore’s Vijay Nagar area. Based on the complaint of a young schoolgirl, the police have filed a case against two accused, Islamist Fardeen Khan, who allegedly used a false identity, and Zoya Khan, who is accused of aiding him and pressuring the victim to convert to Islam.

Pakistan

Abduction, rape, forced conversion, and marriage of minor Hindu girls are common occurrences in the Islamic Republic of Pakistan. At least 1000 minority girls suffer such sex slavery every year in Sindh province alone. Apart from this, Pakistani Hindus face systemic and institutionalized discrimination and neglect, such as frequent attacks on Hindu temples, demonization of education curriculum, police and judicial antipathy, denial of fundamental rights, and even untouchability. This latest instance of the brutal rape and murder of a Bheel woman in Pakistan is yet another proof of the pitiable condition of Hindu minorities in Pakistan.

1) A recent incident in Sindh, Pakistan, has once again brought international attention to the relentless persecution faced by the Hindu minority in the country. According to reports, three Hindu girls and one minor Hindu boy were abducted and forcibly converted to Islam, highlighting a deeply entrenched pattern of religious coercion and violence targeting vulnerable minorities in Pakistan.

Bangladesh

Attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh are relentless and designed to cleanse the religious minority from the country gradually. According to a study by Prof. Abul Barakat of Dhaka University, no Hindus will be left in Bangladesh by 2050 due to systemic and institutionalized persecution. Temple desecration, land grabbing, mob attacks after false blasphemy charges, rape/forced conversion of women, and hate speech are tools used to intimidate and drive Hindus out.

1) In Gopalganj district’s Kotalipara Upazila, Islamists looted six temples in a span of 24 hours. All paraphernalia kept for performing Puja were taken away.

Most hate crimes are driven by anti-Hindu bigotry encoded in certain religious teachings and political ideologies. While the anti-Hindu hate in Islamic countries is evident, there is another subtler form of anti-Hindu sentiment within institutions and the public sphere of ostensibly secular states (like India) that provides an enabling environment for Hinduphobia and hate crimes. This subtle, everyday discrimination can be missed unless one studies prevailing laws and patterns. The gradual ban on firecrackers during Diwali is a good example – it might seem pollution-related on the surface. Still, the double standards at play become apparent when one looks at the larger picture of restrictions on Hindu festivals and the lack of sound reasoning behind the ban.

We request all readers to share other anti-Hindu hate crimes that we might have missed in this period in the comments below or by emailing [email protected]. We also solicit support in maintaining the Hindu human rights tracker database.
