Attacks on Hindus and Hindu Dharma, both in Bharat and overseas, are frequent and unrelenting. In many regions of the world, this persecution is like a genocide slowly unfolding before our eyes. For decades, the world has ignored the actual depth and breadth of these attacks, driven by disturbing anti-Hindu bigotry. From murders, forced conversions, land grabs, assault on festivals, desecration of temples and murtis, hate speech, and sexual violence to institutionalized & legal discrimination, Hindus are facing an increasing assault on their very existence along with an unprecedented Hindu hatred.

In this weekly summary for the period from 16 February to 22 February 2025, we hope to provide a snapshot of such crimes and hopefully awaken more people around the world to this human rights crisis:

Bharat

1) A bus carrying Hindu pilgrims back from Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj to Kolkata was attacked by miscreants near Aurangabad in Bihar. The attackers hiding behind bushes on the roadside pelted stones on the bus, damaging it.

2) In a video that is going viral on social media, a mob of young Muslim men wearing skull caps can be seen creating a ruckus at the Jama Masjid station of the Delhi metro. The video shows the mob exiting the metro station by jumping over the exit gates without using the token or swiping the metro card.

3) ‘Secular’ RJD (Rashtriya Janata Dal) neta Lalu Prasad Yadav mocks Maha Kumbh mela and calls it ‘faltu’ (useless).

4) The Telangana Congress government continued its minority appeasement policy by permitting Muslim employees to leave offices early during the fasting month of Ramzan.

5) A serious case of hate crime was reported from Bihar’s Jamui. Islamist goons allegedly attacked some devotees who were returning from a Hanuman Chalisa Paath program. As per available information, the incident happened in Baliyadih village on the night of 16 February, Sunday. Devotees went to attend the Hanuman Chalisa Paath program in the Baliyadih village. While they were returning, around 300-400 Islamists stopped their car near a mosque and started pelting stones and bricks. The car got seriously damaged in the attack. A total of 10 persons were injured.

6) A mosque’s annual festival procession in the Palakkad region of Kerala featured prominently displayed images of Hamas and Hezbollah terrorists. Banners with the titles “Tharavadis, Thekkebhagam (Ancestral, Southside) had pictures of terrorist commanders Yahya Sinwar, Ismail Haniyeh and Hassan Nasrallah. Notably, all three were neutralised by Israel.

7) Dentist Minnat Hossain was arrested for reportedly sexually assaulting a 10-year-old minor Hindu girl in West Bengal’s Matigara. Hossain lured the girl, who was roaming outside his clinic, saying her teeth were dirty and he’d clean them. After taking her to his chamber, Hossain sexually assaulted the victim who shouted and ran away from the chamber. 

8) In a shocking case of Islamist religious conversion from Uttar Pradesh’s (UP) Dhampur, a Hindu youth named Mukul was coerced into religious conversion under the pretence of getting him married to his Muslim girlfriend. The girl and her family allegedly brainwashed him with promises of marriage, leading to his forced conversion to Islam with the help of a local Maulana. Following the conversion, Mukul was renamed Mahir Ansari and married the girl in a madrasa. The case came to light after Mukul’s father filed a police complaint, prompting authorities to take swift action.

9) Raipur police raided a dairy in Bhainsthan, Sarona, following complaints from cow protection groups and Hindu organizations about suspected beef storage. As per reports, the dairy, operated by Usman Qureshi, was found with raw and cooked meat, leading to a protest by activists who vandalized the premises and demanded the arrest of those responsible. Upon learning of the raid, the dairy’s operator and employees fled the scene.

10) SDPI opposed the Waqf Amendment Bill at the ‘Waqf Protection Rally’ in Kerala’s Kollam. It also accused the BJP of ‘secretly’ imposing Manusmriti through the amendment.

11) Another horrifying case of mass grooming, blackmail, and rape—eerily reminiscent of the infamous 1992 Ajmer scandal—has emerged from Bijainagar, Beawar district, Rajasthan. Islamists first lured a minor with a mobile phone, then sexually exploited her and forced her to bring more victims into their predatory network. The accused, operating in a coordinated manner, lured young girls with expensive gifts like mobile phones, entrapped them in sexual exploitation, and later used threats to force them into Islamic conversion.

12) A minor scuffle between children playing marbles snowballed into violent communal clashes in the Laungiya area of Ajmer in Rajasthan. The situation escalated rapidly leaving more than six people injured. Police force from nine neighbouring police stations had to be deployed to quell the situation.

13) The Delhi Police have arrested three individuals, including a self-proclaimed doctor, for the brutal murder of a 68-year-old Hindu doctor, Ranbir Singh, in Sarai Rohilla, North Delhi. The arrested individuals have been identified as Mohd. Parvez Alam, Mohd. Nasir, and Nikhil Kumar. As per reports, the crime, motivated by robbery, was executed with chilling precision as the accused sought to steal an ultrasound machine and other valuables from the victim’s office.

14) A deeply distressing incident has emerged from Kushinagar, where a six-year-old Hindu girl was reportedly abducted and raped by jihadist Mohammad Sabir, a local man identified by residents as having a history of questionable behaviour.

15) Sambhal Police arrested the wanted accused Ghulam in connection with the Sambhal violence. SP Krishan Kumar Vishnoi revealed that Ghulam confessed to a conspiracy to kill advocate Vishnu Shankar Jain during the 24 November 2024 violence. He also admitted that mastermind Shariq Satha and his gang previously operated with political patronage but are now facing difficulties due to strict police action.

16) In UP’s Sambhal, the Friday azan (call for prayer) was performed without loudspeakers after the loudspeakers were removed as per government order. As per reports, a mosque staffer was seen calling for prayer manually on top of the mosque.

Pakistan

Abduction, rape, forced conversion, and marriage of minor Hindu girls are common occurrences in the Islamic Republic of Pakistan. At least 1000 minority girls suffer such sex slavery every year in Sindh province alone. Apart from this, Pakistani Hindus face systemic and institutionalized discrimination and neglect, such as frequent attacks on Hindu temples, demonization of education curriculum, police and judicial antipathy, denial of fundamental rights, and even untouchability. This latest instance of the brutal rape and murder of a Bheel woman in Pakistan is yet another proof of the pitiable condition of Hindu minorities in Pakistan.

1) Chanda Maharaj (also named Chanda Kumari), a minor Hindu girl from Pakistan whose case of abduction, forced conversion and marriage came into the limelight around two years ago is said to have been killed, according to reports by minority rights activist Shiva Kacchi (Tweet archived here).

Bangladesh

Attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh are relentless and designed to cleanse the religious minority from the country gradually. According to a study by Prof. Abul Barakat of Dhaka University, no Hindus will be left in Bangladesh by 2050 due to systemic and institutionalized persecution. Temple desecration, land grabbing, mob attacks after false blasphemy charges, rape/forced conversion of women, and hate speech are tools used to intimidate and drive Hindus out.

1) The police recovered the mutilated body of a Hindu Awami League leader named Bharat Chandra from Parbatipur upazila in the Dinajpur district. The victim was beheaded and his hands and feet were tied. Bharat Chandra’s body was thereafter dumped near the railway track at the Haldibari rail gate. The victim was 50 years old and a resident of Kalikapur village.

2) A Hindu woman was gang-raped in a bus in the Rajshahi district. The woman and her family were returning to home from Dhaka. The incident occurred at night on 17 February. However, no complaint has been filed regarding the incident so far although the Police have arrested the bus driver and conductor and seized the bus.

Most hate crimes are driven by anti-Hindu bigotry encoded in certain religious teachings and political ideologies. While the anti-Hindu hate in Islamic countries is evident, there is another subtler form of anti-Hindu sentiment within institutions and the public sphere of ostensibly secular states (like India) that provides an enabling environment for Hinduphobia and hate crimes. This subtle, everyday discrimination can be missed unless one studies prevailing laws and patterns. The gradual ban on firecrackers during Diwali is a good example – it might seem pollution-related on the surface. Still, the double standards at play become apparent when one looks at the larger picture of restrictions on Hindu festivals and the lack of sound reasoning behind the ban.
