Hindus under attack: a weekly roundup of hate crimes, persecution, and discrimination against Hindus

Attacks on Hindus and Hindu Dharma, both in Bharat and overseas, are frequent and unrelenting. In many regions of the world, this persecution is like a genocide slowly unfolding before our eyes. For decades, the world has ignored the actual depth and breadth of these attacks, driven by disturbing anti-Hindu bigotry. From murders, forced conversions, land grabs, assault on festivals, desecration of temples and murtis, hate speech, and sexual violence to institutionalized & legal discrimination, Hindus are facing an increasing assault on their very existence along with an unprecedented Hindu hatred.

In this weekly summary for the period from 12 March to 18 March 2023, we hope to provide a snapshot of such crimes and hopefully awaken more people around the world to this human rights crisis:

Bharat

1) Two temples were set on fire and the murtis housed were damaged in two temples in Kishanganj, Bihar on Sunday. A Durga temple and a Hanuman Temple were destroyed in the incident that took place at around 3 AM on 12 March at Mastan Chowk in Bagalbari Panchayat in Kochadhaman block of Kishanganj district. No arrests have been made so far.

2) Moradabad’s Nizam, an accused in cow slaughter and carrying a reward of Rs 25,000 on his head, was injured in a police encounter. He was absconding and police had announced a reward of Rs 25,000 on him. The police had been on the lookout for him and on Sunday an encounter took place between Nizam and the police.

3) A youth named D Pawan was stabbed to death on Thursday around midnight in the Shaheen Nagar area on the outskirts of Telangana’s capital Hyderabad. His family alleged that he was murdered because of a friendship with a Muslim girl. After the investigation, police cracked the case and made startling revelations.

4) On Tuesday, March 14, a case of rape of a minor girl from the Budaun district in Uttar Pradesh has come to light. According to the police, the incident reportedly happened on the night of Tuesday (March 14) when the victim, who is from a ‘Dalit’ family, had reportedly gone to defecate in an open field with her mother. The accused identified as Taslim, Arif, Abrar and Israr, have been booked for rape and assault. The police have also invoked relevant sections of the POCSO Act in the case.

5) One cow smuggler accused Imran, son of Islamuddin, was shot at and injured in a police encounter in Meerut. As per reports, three people accompanying him were caught with a live cow. Weapons used to slaughter the cow and a four-wheeler was also taken into custody from the accused. Police are now looking for the person to whom they used to supply the slaughtered cow meat.

6) A Muslim youth raped a minor Hindu girl after grooming her in Bettiah, Bihar. Even more shockingly, his nephew (sister’s son) made a pornographic video of the heinous deed. The police have arrested the accused Sonu Ali (25), his elder brother Israfeel Ali and brother-in-law Saip Miyan, whereas the girl’s father has named 10 people in his FIR.

7) This Holi we witnessed an attack on the cultural festival from corporates like Bharat Matrimony connecting it with women harassment, and the anti-national eco system did the same with foreigners and women molestation cases. In this article, we will explore how they used out-of-context old videos to target Holi and Hindu culture.

8) On March 15, the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) employees razed a temple built almost fifty years ago during their demolition drive. During the demolition drive a portrait of Bhagwan Hanuman was also trampled. The temple was located on the Shankar road area of Rajendra Nagar area of the city. As soon as the locals and the members of the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) and Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) protested, the demotion activities were stopped.

9) The Toda janjati of Nilgiris in Tamil Nadu have expressed fear that their unique traditions might go extinct due to the Christian conversion menace. They lament that their numbers are dwindling due to conversion and fear extinction as the conversion mafia is aggressive.

10) Yet another tale of grooming jihad – deceit, sexual exploitation, ‘marriage’, followed by violence and attempted forced conversion, and eventual abandonment (luckily no murder this time). Amir, a plumber from Meerut pretended to be AK Chaudhary and messaged a divorced Hindu woman who works in a beauty parlour over Instagram in 2019.

11) Journalist Subhi Vishwakarma spoke to Janjatiya girls who are victims of sexual assault, molestation, and perversion by the principal, padre, and a teacher of the missionary school. A surprise visit by the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) brought the abuse to light. The school is located in a small village in the janjatiya (tribal) belt of MP’s Dindori District.

12) A Muslim man called Wasim Akram Waheed was arrested by police on Saturday in Surat after he used a Hindu name Vasu Gwaladiya and lied about his original identity to lure a 22-year-old girl, a postgraduate topper from a leading university, into a relationship and rape her on the pretext of marriage.

13) The Shivalinga and Nandi’s murti were vandalised and stolen by unknown miscreants from a temple on the outskirts of Bandhur Khurd village.

14) Aung police and SWAT team had an encounter with cow smugglers late on Wednesday night on Chivali Kaudiya road in Fatehpur district of UP. During the encounter, a bullet hit the right leg of a cow smuggler, while the second accomplice ran away seeing the opportunity. The police team chased him for some distance but he managed to escape due to night and dense darkness.

Pakistan

Abduction, rape, forced conversion, and marriage of minor Hindu girls are common occurrences in the Islamic Republic of Pakistan. At least 1000 minority girls suffer such sex slavery every year in Sindh province alone. Apart from this, Pakistani Hindus face systemic and institutionalized discrimination and neglect, such as frequent attacks on Hindu temples, demonization of education curriculum, police and judicial antipathy, denial of fundamental rights, and even untouchability. This latest instance of the brutal rape and murder of a Bheel woman in Pakistan is yet another proof of the pitiable condition of Hindu minorities in Pakistan.

1) In a shocking incident, members of the Hindu Meghwar community in Chapar Khoso village, Dhali taluka of Tharparkar district, Sindh were first denied access to water and later expelled from the village by local Muslims Raju Khoso, Sikandar Khoso and others.

World

1) Days, after Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese assured to curb anti-Bharat elements in the country, the Bharatiya consulate in Brisbane, was forced to close down on Wednesday by Khalistan supporters. “Slogans were raised against Hindus calling them supremacists with Khalistan Zindabad,” said The Australia Today at the Bharatiya consulate located on Swann Road in the Taringa suburb of Brisbane. The Queensland police said it was an unauthorised gathering.

Most hate crimes are driven by anti-Hindu bigotry encoded in certain religious teachings and political ideologies. While the anti-Hindu hate in Islamic countries is evident, there is another subtler form of anti-Hindu sentiment within institutions and the public sphere of ostensibly secular states (like India) that provides an enabling environment for Hinduphobia and hate crimes. This subtle, everyday discrimination can be missed unless one studies prevailing laws and patterns. The gradual ban on firecrackers during Diwali is a good example – it might seem pollution-related on the surface. Still, the double standards at play become apparent when one looks at the larger picture of restrictions on Hindu festivals and the lack of sound reasoning behind the ban.

We request all readers to share other anti-Hindu hate crimes that we might have missed in this period in the comments below or by dropping an email to [email protected]. We also solicit support in maintaining the Hindu human rights tracker database.
