Hindus under attack: a weekly roundup of hate crimes, persecution, and discrimination against Hindus

Attacks on Hindus and Hindu Dharma, both in Bharat and overseas, are frequent and unrelenting. In many regions of the world, this persecution is like a genocide slowly unfolding before our eyes. For decades, the world has ignored the actual depth and breadth of these attacks, driven by disturbing anti-Hindu bigotry. From murders, forced conversions, land grabs, assault on festivals, desecration of temples and murtis, hate speech, and sexual violence to institutionalized & legal discrimination, Hindus are facing an increasing assault on their very existence along with an unprecedented Hindu hatred.

In this weekly summary for the period from 19 February to 25 February 2023, we hope to provide a snapshot of such crimes and hopefully awaken more people around the world to this human rights crisis:

Bharat

1) Another ancient Shiva Temple in Kerala was desecrated while the whole world was engaged in Shivaratri celebrations. The ancient Parakulam Temple inside the forest in the Pathanamthitta district, which has a history of more than 750 years, was attacked. Assailants wrecked the Shivlinga, damaged the Nandikesha deity using sharp tools, and threw away the bronze lamps.

2) Neo-Ambedkarite extremists led by Bhim Army manufactured ‘temple entry’ issues in Madhya Pradesh’s (MP) Khargone & Khandwa.

3) An Islamist mob led by a man named Sihab Uddin vandalized the yagnasthal (place for doing yagna) in Assam’s Karimganj district. The mob also attacked devotees and the Pujari. The incident took place in South Karimganj’s Nilambazar Kalibari Mandir.

4) A gang from Mewat robbed Rs 72 lakhs from 4 ATMs on the same night in Tamil Nadu. Arif, who led the gang, and Azad, one of the members have been nabbed by TN police and sent to judicial custody. While it is the notorious Muslims of Mewat who have indulged in this crime, the media continues to call them “North Indians” and whip up hatred in an already charged atmosphere against Uttar Bharatiyas.

5) A woman named Aradhana has become a victim of grooming jihad as her relationship with twice-married Anwar Khan forced her to commit suicide. 28-year-old Aradhana took the extreme step because Khan was pressurizing her to embrace Islam and refused to marry her when she turn down his proposal of religious conversion. The incident took place in Uttar Pradesh’s (UP) Moradabad.

6) Waiz Mohammed & family kidnapped & forcibly converted the teenage daughter of Hindu neighbour Suman Pathak in UP.

7) The latest legal reports pointed out that the communist regime in Kerala is shamelessly looting our Temple wealth. The report pointed out corruption in procuring pooja items, artificial materials using dangerous chemicals, shoddy repairs/maintenance, and recommendations.

8) In a shocking incident from Mahoba, Uttar Pradesh, an armed Islamist mob disrupted a Hindu marriage and physically assaulted people, including women and children, and molested several girls and women.

9) A Hindu man belonging to an SC community has reported that he has been attacked by a person because he refused to accept Christianity. The victim Nandu Lal lodged a formal complaint with the Kaushambi Police, where he submitted that he was approached by a local Sant Lal, who was running a prayer house in his village.

10) Popular YouTuber Prasanta Dhali became a victim of a cyber attack for raising his voice for Bangladeshi Hindus. However, FB promptly banned his page.

11) The murti of Bhagwan Parshuram was vandalized on February 20 in Rajasthan’s Udaipur triggering protests by locals.

12) One week after a Christian mob led by one Justin brutally attacked a Hindu Janjatiya youth Bineesh on camera, Adimali police refused to use the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Prohibition of Harassment Act (SC/ST Act). Kerala police claimed they could not impose this section as no one has come forward with a complaint.

13) Burglars struck at the famous Kondagattu hill shrine, dedicated to Bhagwan Anjaneya (Hanuman), in Jagtial district in the wee hours of Friday and decamped with silver articles including ‘satagopam’ and ‘thoranam’ from the historic temple atop the hill. Police said three miscreants in the guise of devotees entered the temple complex from the rear gate at around 1.30 a.m. The trio made away with some silver articles and other items used in the daily puja of the temple deity.

14) A government school Principal forced children to erase Vibhuti, Kumkum in Tamil Nadu. When parents asked why she asked them not to sport Hindu symbols she claimed that there is Government Order (GO) banning it. After the parents’ complaint, the Principal Education Officer (PEO) sought a reply from the Principal.

15) Bharat will never be a Hindu Rashtra, Islam is the only true religion says SP MP Shafiqur Rahman Barq.

16) There was apparently targeted harassment of post-graduate medico Dharavathi Preethi by her senior S. A. Saif which could have driven her to attempt suicide, police in Telangana’s Warangal said on Friday.

Pakistan

Abduction, rape, forced conversion, and marriage of minor Hindu girls are common occurrences in the Islamic Republic of Pakistan. At least 1000 minority girls suffer such sex slavery every year in Sindh province alone. Apart from this, Pakistani Hindus face systemic and institutionalized discrimination and neglect, such as frequent attacks on Hindu temples, demonization of education curriculum, police and judicial antipathy, denial of fundamental rights, and even untouchability. This latest instance of the brutal rape and murder of a Bheel woman in Pakistan is yet another proof of the pitiable condition of Hindu minorities in Pakistan.

1) Many cases of everyday crime against the Hindu minority community go unheard. Here are a few such crimes from Sindh province, where the majority of Pakistani Hindus live, from recent weeks reported by Hindu activist Mahesh Vasu.

2) Minor Hindu girl Karishma Bheel (16) was abducted at gunpoint on 15 Feb from Khan Baksh Colony, Naukot, Mirpur Khas district, Sindh province of Pakistan. She was then taken to Gulzar-e-Khalil Sufi Peer Jan Agha Jan Sirhandi dargah in Samaro, Sindh for forced conversion to Islam and nikah (Islamic marriage).

Bangladesh

Attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh are relentless and designed to cleanse the religious minority from the country gradually. According to a study by Prof. Abul Barakat of Dhaka University, no Hindus will be left in Bangladesh by 2050 due to systemic and institutionalized persecution. Temple desecration, land grabbing, mob attacks after false blasphemy charges, rape/forced conversion of women, and hate speech are tools used to intimidate and drive Hindus out.

1) Dilip Chandra Sarker belonging to Barguna Sadar became a victim of anti-minoritism. The state forcibly grabbed 22 acres of land belonging to him and 14 decimals of his land were grabbed by Model Masjid which is currently under construction (Tweet archived here).

Most hate crimes are driven by anti-Hindu bigotry encoded in certain religious teachings and political ideologies. While the anti-Hindu hate in Islamic countries is evident, there is another subtler form of anti-Hindu sentiment within institutions and the public sphere of ostensibly secular states (like India) that provides an enabling environment for Hinduphobia and hate crimes. This subtle, everyday discrimination can be missed unless one studies prevailing laws and patterns. The gradual ban on firecrackers during Diwali is a good example – it might seem pollution-related on the surface. Still, the double standards at play become apparent when one looks at the larger picture of restrictions on Hindu festivals and the lack of sound reasoning behind the ban.

We request all readers to share other anti-Hindu hate crimes that we might have missed in this period in the comments below or by dropping an email to [email protected]. We also solicit support in maintaining the Hindu human rights tracker database.
