Hindus under attack: a weekly roundup of hate crimes, persecution, and discrimination against Hindus

Attacks on Hindus and Hindu Dharma, both in Bharat and overseas, are frequent and unrelenting. In many regions of the world, this persecution is like a genocide slowly unfolding before our eyes. For decades, the world has ignored the actual depth and breadth of these attacks, driven by disturbing anti-Hindu bigotry. From murders, forced conversions, land grabs, assault on festivals, desecration of temples and murtis, hate speech, and sexual violence to institutionalized & legal discrimination, Hindus are facing an increasing assault on their very existence along with an unprecedented Hindu hatred.

In this weekly summary for the period from 30 October to 5 November 2022, we hope to provide a snapshot of such crimes and hopefully awaken more people around the world to this human rights crisis:

Bharat

1) Three men have been arrested for vandalising a murti in Tamil Nadu. Ajeez, Sirajuddin and Veera Gautam were apprehended by the police for vandalising the Amman murti in a recently renovated temple.

2) A grooming case has come to light from Madhya Pradesh in which Sheikh Jahid has been accused of duping her by posing as a Brahmin for about 8 years. She has also alleged that he forced her to consume beef and embrace Islam.

3) Sohail groomed a minor and later gang-raped her with 4 others. The accused have been booked under POCSO.

4) Ex-idol wing cop IG Pon Manicka Vel has alleged that murtis repatriated from foreign countries are kept in a pitiful state and smuggled again. He also alleged that 197 murtis kept in the idol vaults of HRCE are fake. Even after retirement, he continues to fight for the deities to return to their rightful place.

5) An Islamist mob led by a local policeman went on a rampage near Muvattupuzha in Ernakulam district on Deepawali day. The attackers targeted Tamil families in an area infested with radical Islamists. The alleged ‘crime’ was that they burst crackers to celebrate Deepawali.

6) Another case of alleged Grooming Jihad (aka Love Jihad) has come to the fore, this time from Maharashtra’s Kolhapur. A 13-year-old Hindu girl went missing since her last exam conducted on October 17 just before the Diwali festival and has not been found as yet. Her family lodged a complaint under the POCSO Act and have apparently named one Altaf Kazi (23) as the accused who groomed and abducted their daughter.

7) Faridabad Sector 65 Crime branch and Mahila thana police have arrested Sajid for the rape and sexual exploitation of a minor Hindu girl. He has been charged under IPC Section 506 (Criminal intimidation) and relevant sections of the POCSO Act (Protection of children from sexual offences) in the FIR filed on October 31. Reports say Sajid is married and a father of three.

8) Uttar Pradesh police arrested pastor Vijay Masih for forcibly converting Hindus through money and other allurements.

9) Eight people have been booked for trying to convert Vanvasis to Christianity in Karnataka. They were travelling to a mass prayer meeting when police arrested them. Their source of funds is being investigated and their conversion activities are being looked into.

10) A victim of grooming jihad ended her life. Nanda (20) could not bear the blackmail of Abdul Shuhaib (20) and committed suicide.

11) 20-year-old youth identified as Mohammed Shehzad was arrested for kicking a six-year-old child for leaning on his car parked at a no-parking area.

12) Already married Shahrukh pretends to be Hindu, ‘marries’ & rapes a girl in Madhya Pradesh’s Indore.

13) Hindu exodus forced by Islamists on the lines of Kairana is repeating itself in the Tila Mohalla area of UP’s (Uttar Pradesh) Firozabad. Media report notes Hindus in the area have put up posters of their exodus claiming they are being harassed by Muslims who want to build a Masjid in place of their temple among other things. They have narrated their ordeal naming Raju Chikna and Aman Khan as the main culprits.

14) Shiv Sena (Taksali) leader Sudhir Suri was killed by a suspected Khalistani in broad daylight on Friday in Amritsar, Punjab.

Bangladesh

Attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh are relentless and designed to gradually cleanse the religious minority from the country. According to a study by Prof. Abul Barakat of Dhaka University, no Hindus will be left in Bangladesh by 2050 due to systemic and institutionalized persecution. Temple desecration, land grabbing, mob attacks after false blasphemy charges, rape/forced conversion of women, and hate speech are some tools used to intimidate and drive Hindus out.

1) A murder attempt was made on businessman Arjun Bhaduri in Feni’s Jamadar Bazaar on October 30 (Tweet archived here).

2) Islamist fanatics beheaded vigraha of Maa Kali on October 30 in Rangpur

3) Maa Kali’s vigraha was beheaded in an attack on a temple in Dinajpur’s Balaram Bazaar on November 4 (Tweet archived here).

Most hate crimes are driven by anti-Hindu bigotry encoded in certain religious teachings and political ideologies. While the anti-Hindu hate in Islamic countries is evident, there is another subtler form of anti-Hindu sentiment within institutions and the public sphere of ostensibly secular states (like India) that provides an enabling environment for Hinduphobia and hate crimes. This subtle, everyday discrimination can be missed unless one studies prevailing laws and patterns. The gradual ban on firecrackers during Diwali is a good example – it might seem pollution-related on the surface, but the double standards at play become apparent when one looks at the larger picture of restrictions on Hindu festivals and the lack of sound reasoning behind the ban.

We request all readers to share other anti-Hindu hate crimes that we might have missed in this period in the comments below or by dropping an email to [email protected]. We also solicit support in maintaining the Hindu human rights tracker database.
